High school weekly rewind: Fennville soccer tops Saugatuck in rivalry

The Fennville boys soccer team defeated Saugatuck 3-1 in their rivalry showdown on Wednesday at Saugatuck.

Juan Porrez led Fennville with two goals. Armando Sanchez also added a goal. Emanuel Guzman was credited with two assists. Miguel Solis-Salazar also had an assist. Jose Sanchez had four saves in goal for the Blackhawks.

BOYS SOCCER

Holland Christian 1, Unity Christian 1

The Maroons tied the Crusaders in their rivalry showdown.

Michael Pierce scored for the Maroons (7-1-2; 3-0-2 in OK Blue) with an assist from Derek Huisman.

Holland 1, Wyoming 0

The Dutch won the OK Green game on Tuesday.

In the second half, both teams scored goals that were disallowed. With 6 minutes left, Owen Ceithaml converted a direct kick to win the match.

"Wyoming played with speed that frustrated us, and neither team could do much in the first half," said Holland coach Greg Ceithaml. "I was pleased with our effort in the second half and one direct kick was the difference. We look forward to building some momentum now."

Grand Rapids Union 2, Holland 1

Holland scored the first goal of the match in the second half off a header from Timo Phillips. Unfortunately, Holland could not hold Union down and conceded two goals before the final whistle.

"It was a tough road game tonight," said Holland coach Greg Ceithaml. "Union played a little harder than we did. They were a little tougher tonight and that made the difference." Holland is now 3-7-1.

Fennville 1, Black River 1

Cesar Arredondo scored for Fennville on an assist from Armando Sanchez. Jose Sanchez had four saves in goal.

Hamilton 2, West Catholic 1

Hamilton notched its second victory in a row with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over OK Blue foe West Catholic. Diego Medellin and Spencer Jensen scored for the Hawkeyes with Joe Johnson adding an assist. Griffin Bolhuis stayed strong in the net and so did the Hawkeye back line to help in the winning effort.

"I told the guys after the game that the soccer gods will eventually reward you for playing the game the right way," Hamilton coach Tyler Robinson said. "And other than one exception this season, we’ve been building upon good habits each day since day one of the season. It’s starting to pay off in the wins column, but we are working for much more."

Hamilton 9, Saugatuck 1

Hamilton earned a late-game mercy win at Saugatuck. Scoring goals for the Hawkeyes were Spencer Jensen and Joe Johnson each with two and Ricky Monarrez, Diego Medellin, Noel Vigil, Drew Borg, and Gavin Sabala each with one. Johnson and Jensen each tacked on two assists, while Malachi Lauer, Gavin Sabala, and Trent Prince each had one. Griffin Bolhuis earned the win in net.

Holland Christian 2, Coopersville 1

The Maroons earned the OK Blue victory.

Zeeland West 3, Reeths-Puffer 2

Zeeland West followed took a large leap and rebounded from a big loss to Mona Shores on Tuesday and beat a very good Reeths-Puffer team 3-2 on Thursday.

The Dux got on the board when Ivan Michmerhuizen found a rebounded ball, split two defenders and calmly placed a left footed shot past the keeper.  Sammy Salas followed shortly after when he beat two defenders and the keeper and walked in his shot to put the Dux up 2-0 in the first half.

After two goals by the Rockets tied the game, Micah Henry took a ball, beat a defender and  the keeper to put the Dux up for good.

West Ottawa 1, Kalamazoo Central 0

Calin Nichols earned the shutout for the Panthers with one save for the game on Saturday.

Andy Solis secured the victory with a calm shot to beat the Giant keeper.

Portage Northern 2, West Ottawa 1

The Panthers lost the non-conference game on Saturday.

Alejandro Ajpop's excellent full volley from 30 yards out hit a defender only to find Kamren Manikham slashing in for the loose ball to strike it low past the keeper from outside the 18 box.

St. Joseph 4, Holland 2

St. Joseph jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but midway through the second half, Holland mounted a comeback. Owen Ceithaml scored on a long strike, and Josiah VanHekken scored shortly after that with a shot from a rebound. St. Joe scored again to finish the scoring.

"St. Joe is an excellent team," said Holland coach Greg Ceithaml. "Despite the score, I thought we played well. We played hard and created some dangerous combinations. We took a step forward today."

Holland is now 3-8-2.

CROSS COUNTRY

Panthers, Chix second at Spartan invite

The West Ottawa girls cross country team took second in the MSU Spartan Invite Elite Divisionon Friday.

The Panthers scored 95 points to trail Hilliard Davidson (81).

Helen Sachs won the race in 17:15.76 going 1-2 with teammate Arianne Olson (17:49.94). Megan Postma finished 20th (19:32.59) and Jane Olney was 34th (19:56.99).

The Zeeland East girls finished second in the bronze division with 97, trailing Otsego (62). Holland was 17th (411).

Zeeland East's Allison Kuzma won the bronze race in 18:57.46. Emma Drnek took 23rd (20:54.01).

The Zeeland East boys finished 10th (250) and Holland was 12th (296). Allendale won with 133.

Holland's Noah Lambers was ninth (17:02.33). Zeeland East's Gavin Wiersma was 13th (17:16.06).

Hawkeyes win invite

The Hamilton boys cross country team won the Country Mill Classic on Saturday.

The Hawkeyes scored 22 points to hold off second-place Charlotte (54) and the rest of the field.

Hamilton's Max VanHuis won the race in 16:30.4. Abatu Dykstra was third (17:48.2), Parker Matheny was fifth (17:57.0), Josh Langeland was sixth (18:00.7) and Evan Kraker was seventh (18:08.0).

The Hamilton girls finished fifth with 132. South Lyon won with 17. Emma Heyereman took 21st (23:48.5).

Hawkeyes third at invite

The Hamilton boys cross country team took third (55) at the Middleville invite. Caledonia won with 32.

Hamilton's Max VanHuis was second overall (16:30.42). Abatu Dykstra was fourth (17:18.33) and Josh Langeland was 15th (17:54.93).

The Hamilton girls finished fifth (137). Caledonia won with 26. Emma Heyerman was 20th (22:56.94).

Saugatuck takes fourth

The Saugatuck boys placed fourth in the Division 4 race at the Holly Invitational. Senior Charlie Stormer (13th) and junior Russell VandePoel (14th) lead the way for the Trailblazers. Freshmen Sammy Gamboa placed 29th and improved his 5K PR by 50 seconds. Senior Luke Gorgas placed 34th and junior Loch Rigozzi placed 45th.

Black River competes in SAC

The Black River boys team finished sixth lead by Isaac Edgington who finished 6th, followed by Roger Hernandez 13th and Isaac Johnson 21st.

The girls team finished seventh lead by Lily Laburn who finished 12th, followed by Nora Ballard 33rd and Camille Wolbrink 34th.

GIRLS GOLF

Hamilton 216, Zeeland East 232

The Chix hosted the Hawkeyes at Winding Creek, playing the White nine course.

Leading the way for the Chix and medalist for the match was Carly Lukins who had three birdies, one double bogey, one bogey, and three pars for an even par round of 36. Also scoring for the Chix were Madolynne Bos, Kendyll Samora and Taya Schansnki.

Dux take second at jamboree

The Zeeland West varsity golf team placed second at the Holland Jamboree held at Clearbrook Golf Club Wednesday.  Rylee Smith led the Dux and was the overall medalist for the event with a 37.  Eve Kasten added a 45, Natalie Kernstock a 48, and Kairi Beckwith contributed a 58.

The Chix took fourth and the Dutch were fifth, led by Kristin Messer.

West Ottawa takes fifth

The Panthers traveled to The Meadows of GVSU to compete in the OK Red Mis-Season tournament. West Ottawa finished fifthoverall with a 403. Rockford won with a 327.

The Panthers were led by Danika Denhof, who finished 10th overall in the tournament, shooting a 92. Ana Niziolek added a 94, Avery VanDellen shot a 105 andd Isabella Grantham rounded out the scoring with a 112.

The Panthers then traveled to Blythefield C.C. to compete in the Rockford Jamboree and took eighth. West Ottawa was led by Ana Niziolek with a 50. On Thursday, West Ottawa hosted the OK Red jamboree and took eighth. Niziolek shot a 52.

GIRLS SWIMMING

West Ottawa 180, Hudsonville 128

Lorelei Bremer won the 200 freestyle (2:05.60). Makenzie Baldwin won the 200 IM (2:16.28) and the 500 freestyle (5:18.95). Kalyna Pyk won the 50 freestyle (25.57) and the 100 freestyle (55.82). Madelyn Brack won diving (170.0). Oriana O'Mealey won the 100 backstroke (1:05.40). Monroe Milobinski won the 100 breaststroke (1:16.66).

Spring Lake 109, Hamilton 77

Top performers for the Hawkeyes were Anevay Hager, who finished first in diving, and Jocelyn Borg, who won the 100 breaststroke.

BOYS TENNIS

West Ottawa 9, East Kentwood 0

The Panthers swept the OK Red match.

Elliot Dozeman won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Traiden Bethke won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. Trevyn Bethke won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3. Drew Rothstein won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4.

In doubles, Liam Herweyer-Jack O'Brien won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1. Jake Bloomers-Cody Shurman won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. Brody Ruby-Brayden Goodwin won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3. Max McCormick-Landon Meyer won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4. Hugh Ervine-Teddy Mauger won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5.

West Ottawa 6, Grand Haven 3

The Panthers won the OK Red matchup on Wednesday.

Traiden Bethke won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Drew Rothstein won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4.

In doubles, Liam Herweyer-Jack O'Brien ton 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1. Jake Bloomers-Cody Schurman won 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2. Brody Ruby-Brayden Goodwin won 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3. Max McCormick-Landon Meyer won 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 4.

The Dutch swept the OK Green match.

Aiden Sin won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Andrew Lubbers won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 Graham VanFassen won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. James Baer won by default at No. 4.

In doubles, Sam Payne-Elliot Wehrmeyer won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1. Emmett Book-Oscar Miller won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. Connor Huizinga-Willem Emerson won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Harper Prutch-Owen Baer won by default at No. 4.

The Dutch also beat Grand Rapids Union 7-1 with all winning in straight sets except No. 3 singles.

Holland second at home quad

The Holland boys tennis team scored 15 points to finish second at its home quad on Saturday. Battle Creek Lakeview won with 23.

Andrew Lubbers won the flight title at No. 2 singles. James Baer was runner-up at No. 4 doubles, along with Elliot Wehrmeyer-Sam Payne at No. 1 doubles, Oscar Miller-Emmett Book at No. 2 doubles, Connor Huizinga-Willem Book at No. 3 doubles and Owen Baer-Harper Prutch at No. 4 doubles.

Holland Christian 5, Unity Christian 3

The Maroons won the OK Blue match.

Dylan Becksvoort won 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. At No. 1, Tucker Heneghan lost a three-set match 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 to Unity's Ben Timermans.

The Maroons swept the doubles with Simon Langejans-Henry Langejans winning 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1. Michel Boerman-Tryg Tanis won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2. Jackson Engbers-Tyler Hemmeke won 6-2, 7-5 at NO. 3. Hayden Bauman-Evan Disselkoen won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4.

Hamilton 6, West Catholic 2

The Hawkeyes won the OK Blue match.

Mason Blauwkamp won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Liam Kelley won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3. Seth Lappinga won 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4.

Reece Carlson-Aiden Hamlin won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. Jacob DeFouw-Charlie Dozeman won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3. Colin Hamlin-Nathan Freyhof won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4.

The Chix tied the OK Green match.

Brady Schanski won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Will Michmerhuizen won 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 2. Charlie Reese won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3. Easton Beukema-Seth VanTimmeren won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 doubles.

VOLLEYBALL

Zeeland West 3, Holland 0

The Dux won 25-19, 25-21, 25-13 over the Dutch.

Holland's Alesha Vandenberge had 5 kills and 7 digs. Ari Gray had 14 digs. Libby LeFebre had eight digs and Makayla Peart had eight assists and eight digs. Holland is 0-5 overall and 0-2 in conference matches.

Zeeland East 3, Holland 0

The Chix won the OK Green match 25-9, 25-10, 25-15 on Thursday.

Kiria Elenbaas served five aces and had 17 digs. Cece Huizingh had four aces and 16 assists.

Reilly Zegunis totaled 13 kills to lead the Chix.

Zeeland East 3, Muskegon 0

The Chix won the OK Green match 25-5, 25-11, 25-11.

Macey Smith served five aces. Reilly Zegunis had seven kills. Kiria Elenbaas had seven digs and Morgan Mazeikis had 13 assists.

Holland Christian 3, Spring Lake 0

The Maroons won the OK Blue match 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 on Thursday.

"I thought our girls came out with energy today. Our home crowd was roaring," Holland Christian coach Gerrit VanKlaveren said. "Celebrating the middle school programs at HC and Zeeland Christian fired up the girls and reminded them that they were in their place once."

West Catholic 3, Holland Christian 1

The Maroons lost the OK Blue match 25-18, 25-14, 24-26, 25-20.

"I feel we fought till the end, just too many errors, and we know that. We will keep at it and push through this day," Holland Christian coach Gerrit VanKlaveren said.

Coopersville 3, Hamilton 0

The Hawkeyes lost the OK Blue machup 25-21, 25-22, 25-15.

Joelle Boeskool had 16 assists, Jeralyn Hoppes had 11 kills and Emma O'Connor totaled seven kills.

Unity Christian 3, Hamilton 1

The Hawkeyes lost the OK Blue match 17-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-21. Maddie Jamrog had 23 digs and 10 kills, while Emma O'Connor added 11 kills.

Hudsonville 3, West Ottawa 1

The Panthers lost the OK Red match 25-7, 19-25, 25-19, 25-15 on Thursday.

"After a very slow start, the team found momentum with their steady serve receive and defense," West Ottawa coach Kaitlyn Lawton said. " The second, third and most of the fourth set was a great fight and we had some great sparks.  It's just the first day of conference and the future is looking bright for this group."

West Ottawa second in tourney

West Ottawa had to fight through adversity early in the day, but fought hard and earned themselves first place in their pool moving them to the Gold Bracket. In Gold bracket the team started slow, but climbed their way back against Jenison to earn a third set. The team came up just short and earned second place overall in the tournament.

Chix go 2-1

The Zeeland East volleyball team defeated Cedar Springs 25-18, 25-16 and Kenowa Hills 25-18, 25-16 and lost to Hudsonville 25-15, 25-12 at a Saturday quad.

Macey Smith served eight aces. Reilly Zegunis posted 21 kills. Cece Huizingh had 28 assists. Kiria Elenbaas had 15 digs, while Smith and Emerson DeBoer each had 10. Zegunis had four blocks.

Dux claim silver bracket

The Zeeland West volleyball team defeated Reeths-Puffer 25-18, 25-12, lost to Cooperville 25-17, 25-13 and tied Hamilton 25-18, 20-25. Hamilton advanced to the gold bracket of the tournament and the Dux went to the silver and defeated Wyoming and Lakeshore to win the silver bracket.

Dutch go 0-4

At the Calvin Christian invite, Holland lost to Spring Lake, Calvin Christian, Ottawa Hills and Mendon.

"We will continue learning from our mistakes and working hard as a team," said Holland coach Kim Rumpsa.

BOYS WATER POLO

Zeeland 16, Portage 3

In the first district matchup of the season, Zeeland started fast scoring nine goals in the first quarter. Will Posthumus (four), Mason Landes (three), and Connall Pierson (three) led the team in scoring.

Lucas Dattels, Ethan Streeter, Keagan Louwerse, Carter Freeman, Alex Karn and Keaton Drager all added a goal each. Keaton also had 10 saves in cage and four assists.
