High school weekly rewind: West Ottawa girls, Zeeland West Hamilton boys cross win invites

The West Ottawa girls won the Under the Lights Invite Midnight Girls Lare School division on Friday night.

The Panthers scored 24 points to dominate the field. Zeeland East was second with 62. Holland was seventh with 160.

The top six finishers were local runners as West Ottawa's Arianne Olson won the race in 17:11.3. She went 1-2 with Helen Sachs, who finished in 17:17.0, a personal best.

Zeeland East's Allison Kuzma was third in 18:29.9, a personal best, ahead of West Ottawa's Megan Postma (19:21.7) and Jane Olney (19:47.5), a personal best. Zeeland East's Meredith Cook was sixth (19:48.9).

West Ottaw's Ava Porras was 12th (20:10.9), Zeeland East's Addie Grill was 14th (20:12.7), Holland's Alisa Mason was 16th (20:21.4)and Zeeland East's Emma Drnek was 17th (20:40.4).

The Zeeland West boys won the Under the Lights Invite Twilight Boys Large School division on Friday night.

The Dux finished with 40 points, just ahead of Jenison (43).

Chase Holwerda finished second overall in the division (16:39.9), followed by teammates Caleb Smith (16:48.8) and Nathan Golding (16:51.5) for a 2-3-4 Dux finish.

The Zeeland West girls were second (63) behind Jenison (36). Jordyn Klaasen was fourth (19.07.7) and Bella Hoffer was eighth (20.14.9).

The Holland Christian boys scored 42 points to finish second at the Under the Lights Invite Sunset Small School division.

Wyoming Potter's House won with 20. Saugatuck was fifth.

Holland Christian's Will Engbers was third overall at 16:26.8. Aidan Brinks (17:09.7), Nathan Steen (17:13.3) and Brayden Rynsburger (17:25.8) went 8-9-10 and Landen Gerritsma was 12th (17:37.8).

Saugatuck's Charlie Storm (17.41.5) and Luke Gorgas (17.42.2) went 12-13.

The Holland Christian girls (123) were sixth while Saugatuck was seventh (202). Alina Martinsen took 14th for Holland Christian (21:42.3) and Maya Veldt was 36th for Saugatuck (23.39.4).

In the Twilight large school division, Holland was fourth (107), Zeeland East was fifth (114) and West Ottawa was seventh (142).

Holland's Adrian Castillo was fifth (16:39.4) and Noah Lambers (17:08.0) was 10th. Zeeland East's Gavin Wiersma was 11th (17:15.9). West Ottawa's Connor Wooley was 14th (17:32.2).

In the girls small school invite, Black River was fifth and Calvary was sixth. Black River was fourth for the boys.

CROSS COUNTRY

Hamilton wins Early Eagle

Hamilton boys cross country team won the Kent City Early Eagle invite on Tuesday with 29 points.

Meanwhile, the Hamilton girls finished third.

Medaling for the Hawkeyes were: Max VanHuis, Abatu Dykstra, Josh Langeland, Noah Hernandez, Evan Kraker, Brody Crandall, Camden Patmos, Parker Matheny, Carson McIntire and Josiah Banks.

Girls medalists were: Trina Farris, Emma Heyerman, Ella Schwartz and Kaylee Wolters.

"It was a solid opening day for both teams. With the number of quality opening day times and medal winners on the boy's side, it becomes quite evident that we are very deep," Hamilton coach Travis Pertner said. "We just need to find a way to move runners 3-10 up with our first two runners."

BOYS TENNIS

West Ottawa wins Pioneer invite

The West Ottawa boys tennis team took first place for the first time in program history at the Ann Arbor Pioneer Quad. Every flight took either first or second place on the day, making this a total team win.

The Panthers tied Ann Arbor Pioneer 4-4 on the day (another program first). They also played Portage Central and came out on top 8-0. Saline was the final opponent on the day and they secured an 8-0 victory against them as well.

At No. 1 singles, Elliot Dozeman took first place, going unbeaten. The rest of the singles lineup, Traiden Bethke, Trevyn Bethke and Drew Rothstein each finished scond. In doubles, Liam Herweyer-Jack O'Brien took first at No. 1. Cody Schurman-Jake Bloomers took first at No. 2. Brody Ruby-Brayden Gooden win took first at No. 3. Landon Meyer-Max McCormick took second at No. 4.

Holland wins quad by 1

Holland hosted their second quad of the season with Allegan, DeWitt, and East Kentwood. The race for first place came down to the 48th and final match of the day. Holland's No. 1 singles, Aiden Sin, defeated DeWitt 6-4, 7-5 to give Holland 18 points, edging Allegan's 17.

"It was exciting to pull of a big win with everyone watching," said Sin. "It was a confidence booser for the rest of the season."

The Dutch were also led by the first place finishes of Andrew Lubbers (No. 2 singles), Connor Huizinga and Willem Evenson (No. 3 doubles), and the No. 4 doubles team of Owen Baer and Harper Prutch.

Huizinga stated, "Through every match, we never gave up and we fought for every point we played."

Holland coach, Kyle Kreps, was pleased with the fight the team showed: "Today was a total team effort. All flights contributed to our 18 points and I loved the way we encouraged each other throughout the day."

VOLLEYBALL

Chix top Hamilton in 5

Zeeland East defeated Hamilton 25-16, 14-25, 26-24, 16-25, 20-22 in a five-set thriller with two sets going to extra points.

The Chix also defeated Niles 25-22, 25-13.

Reilly Zegunis paced the Chix with 30 kills, while Katie Carlson had 25. Carlson served six aces. Zegunis had four blocks.

Kiria Elenbaas had 21 digs, while Cece Huizingh had 15, Emerson DeBoer had 11 and Petra DeBoer had 11. Zegunis and Carlson each chipped in with nine. Huzingh dished out 70 assists on the day.

In the other tri match for Hamilton, the Hawkeyes defeated Niles 25-20, 23-25, 15-3.

Hamilton's Jeralyn Hoppes had 24 kills, while Madie Jamrog added 19. Maddie Stoel dished out 33 assists.

West Ottawa wins tourney

The West Ottawa volleyball team traveled across state to Brighton for the Legacy Varsity Volleyball Tournament.  The Panthers started out the day beating Fenton and Alled Lake Western in pool play, followed by Lake Fenton in the challenge round.

The team went undefeated into the Gold Bracket starting their quarterfinal round against Oxford and taking the game in three sets.  West Ottawa matched up with Plymouth in the semifinals where a solid team effort led the team to a two-set win.  The Panthers came up against Notre Dame Prep in the finals.  Notre Dame Prep started with a quick start and won the first set in demanding fashion.  The Panthers rose to the challenge and won the second set by two.  The third set was a very slow start for West Ottawa, trailing 10-4, but a stellar comeback gave the Panthers the three-set win in the finals.

"This group of athletes are the definition of team," West Ottawa coach Kaitlyn Lawton said. "They all accept the roles they have within the team and have made it their mission to do their part to the best of their abilities."

Holland Christian wins WMVOA bracket

Holland Christian played in the WMVOA Invite at Caledonia High school, winning the silver bracket.

The Maroons played South Christian, jenison, TC West, and Caledonia in a round robin, going 3-5 in sets record. Then went on a roll through the silver bracket winning 2-0 vs St. Johns, 2-0 vs Kalamazoo Central, and then winning 3-2 over Traverse City Central.

"So proud of the girls, we focused on our process and what we can control and the results followed," Holland Christian coach Gerrit VanKlaveren said.

Tryna VanderZwaag averaged 15 assists, three kills and five digs per set. Annabel Pierce posted five kills and two aces per set and Jaylyn Harsevoort averaged three kills per set.

Otsego 3, Hamilton 1

The Hawkeyes lost the non-conference matchup 18-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-21.

Emma O'Conner posted nine kills for Hamilton.

BOYS SOCCER

West Ottawa 3, Traverse City Central 1

The Panthers won the non-conference game.

Andrew Merlam, Andrew Spilotro, and Carson Witvoet scored the goals for the Panthers.

West Ottawa also lost 5-0 to Forest Hills Northern on Friday.

Potters House 3, Black River 1

In a rematch of last year's state semifinal game, Potters House was able to get two goals in the first 3 minutes of the second half to open up a two-goal lead after a scoreless first half.  Black River battled back and Mike Galicia cut the lead in half with 10 minute remaining on an assist from Levi Benson.

With 37 second left in a last ditch effort to get the equalizer, Black River was pushing lots of bodies forward and was caught with a quick counter attack to put the game away.  Jake Caropepe made nine saves in goal for Black River.

South Christian 1, Holland Christian 0

In a battle of state powers, the Maroons were edged at home on Monday.

Zeeland East 4, Black River 1

Charlie Reither scored for Black River 2 minutes into the second half to even the score at 1-1. Aaron Summitt had the assist. Talen Nahal and Jake Caropepe split time in net and combined for 12 saves.

Fennville 5, Schoolcraft 0

Juan Porrez led Fennville scoring two goals. Emanuel Guzman and Armando Sanchez each scored a goal and had an assist. Miguel Solis-Salazar also added a goal. Angel Villalobos and Efrain Peralta were both credited with an assist. Jose Sanchez had 4 saves in goal for the shutout.

GIRLS SWIMMING

West Ottawa 109, Farmington 71

The Panthers opened the season with a non-conference victory.

Makenzie Baldwin won the 200 freestyle (1:59.47). Kalyna Pyk won the 50 freestyle (25.03) and 100 freestyle (55.37). Baylee Davis won the 500 freestyle (5:38.93). Madelyn Brack won diving (176.25).

Hudsonville 103, Hamilton 77

Hamilton's lone individual win came from diver Anevay Hager. Addie Grabinski finished secondnd in the 200 and 500 freestyle and Jocelyn Borg, finished second in the 100 breaststroke.

"The swim of the meet came from Emma DenUyl on her anchor leg of the 4x100 freestyle relay," Hamilton coach Matt Oonk said.

BOYS TENNIS

Chix swept

On Monday, Zeeland East lost 8-0 to Hudsonville and 8-0 to Grand Haven.

Later in the week, the Chix lost to 8-2 St. Joseph and 7-3 Jension.

GIRLS GOLF

Zeeland West 193, West Ottawa 217

The Dux defeated the Panthers in a non-conference matchup.

West Ottawa's Ana Niziolek led the way with a 50, Dejah Pico shot 53, and Anne Uzelac and Anna Anderson both shot 57 to round out the scoring.

Lukins is medalist

The first Jamboree of the season was hosted by Reeths Puffer at Lincoln Golf Course north of Muskegon. The Chix were led by Junior Carly Lukins who was the medalist with a one under par score. She started her round hot with three birdies and cruised to a 35. Also scoring for the Chix were Sophomore Madolynne Bos with a 53, Freshmen Katherine Rogovich with a 60 and Freshmen Taya Schanski with a 62. The team score of 210 placed the Chix in third.

For Holland, Emma Hulst and Kristin Messer shot a 54 and a 56, respectively.

The Chix played the 18 hole event at Yankee Springs Golf Course on Frieday, the team had a total of 457.  Lukins who shot a 3 over par score of 75 to take secondnd place out of 126 golfers.

Also scoring for the Chix were Madolynne Bos with a 124, Kendyll Samora also with a 124 and Taya Schanski with a 134.

The Dux finished third. The Dux were led by Rylee Smith with a 77 and finished tied for third out of 126 players.  Eve Kasten added a 90, Natalie Kernstock a 100 and Izzy Zamora contributed a 101.

Panthers eighth at Jenison

The Meadows at GVSU to compete in the Jenison Jamboree. The Panthers were led by Danika Denhof with a 55 followed by Ana Niziolek with a 58, Isabella Grantham with a 62 and Annie Uzelac rounding out the scoring with a 63.
