High school weekly rewind: Holland volleyball claims first win; Several 5-setters

The Holland volleyball team earned its first win of the season on Tuesday night, defeating Wyoming 25-18, 23-25, 25-18, 25-15.

"Holland played hard and as a team tonight, I am proud of them," Holland coach Kim Rumpsa said.

Leading the Dutch in aces were Makayla Peart and Libby LeFebre; leading in kills were Ari Gray, Libby LeFebre and Jada Livingston; leading in assists was Peart and leading in digs were Gray and Madison Postma.

The Lady Dutch are now 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the OK Green.

VOLLEYBALL

Hamilton 3, West Catholic 2

The Hamilton volleyball team defeated Grand Rapids West Catholic in a five-set thriller in OK Blue action.

Madie Jamrog had 11 kills, while Jess Berens posted 18 digs and Maddie Stoel dished out 22 assists.

Zeeland West 3, Mona Shores 2

The Dux won a five-setter against the Sailors 17-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-13 on Tuesday.

After losing the first two sets, the Dux stormed back to take the final three and earn the OK Green victory.

Nevaeh Bakker had 17 kills, while Lindy Gulker had 14, Ally Yonker had 12 and Abby Nash had 10.

Gulker totaled 15 digs, followed by Ella Gruppen and Lindsey Houle with 13 apiece and Yonker and Nash with nine apiece. Houle dished out 45 assists and served three aces. Claire Story had two aces and Bakker had six blocks.

The Dux improved to 11-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Saugatuck 3, Black River 2

The Trailblazers won the SAC Central Division match 25-12, 21-25, 25-17, 22-25, 15-13 on Thursday.

"With scrappy play, relentless pursuit on defense, we prevailed to win the match," Saugatuck coach Sherri Austin said.

Alyssa Ries had 11 kills and 13 digs. Haley Rivera had 15 assists, 15 digs and four aces. Erin Moerler had nine kills. Jenn Schock had 19 digs and 15 assists. Kennedy Gustafson h ad 12 kills and Eva Kierzek had 12 digs.

West Ottawa 3, East Kentwood 0

The Panthers won the OK Red match 25-20, 25-13, 25-15 to improve to 1-1 in conference play.

"The team put together an all around solid match. Team chemistry was at an all time high and communication led the way for the defense to take charge of the game. Defensively, nothing hit the floor and no ball was too far to run down. The offense played their best match of the year with only six errors on the night. Everyone on the team did their part to make this an all around team win," West Ottawa coach Kaitlyn Lawton said.

Zeeland East 3, Reeths-Puffer 1

The Chix won the OK Green match 23-25, 25-13, 25-11, 25-19.

Reilly Zegunis led the Chix with 16 kills and three aces. Macey Smith added nine kills and three aces. Cece Huizingh had 32 assists. Kiria Elenbaas had 14 digs, while Smith and Emerson DeBoer had 12 apiece. Petra DeBoer had 11.

Saugatuck spits tri

Saugatuck defeated Fennville 25-19, 19-25, 15-13 and lost 22-25, 25-23, 17-15 to Allegan.

Kennedy Gustafson had 17 kills. Alyssa Ries had 11 kills, 12 digs and three aces. Jennifer Schock posted 24 digs, 19 assists and three aces. Haley Rivera dished out 20 assist and had 14 digs. Eva Kierzek had 10 digs.

Coopersville 3, Holland Christian 0

The Maroons lost the OK Blue matchup 25-23, 25-21, 25-21 on Tuesday.

Kierea Smits had six kills, hitting .300 for the match. Tryna VanderZwaag had 20 assists, 12 digs, five kills and five aces.

"We fought hard and well, we never gave up. I am proud of our team effort. Back to work tomorrow," Holland Christian coach Gerrit Van Klaveren said.

Chix go 1-2 at quad

Zeeland East defeated East Grand Rapids 25-16, 16-25, 15-12 and lost to Grandville 28-26, 25-17 and Forest Hills Eastern 25-19, 25-22, 15-11 on Saturday at the East Grand Rapids quad.

Reilly Zegunis posted 35 kills. Brylee Selby had 13 and Macey Smith had 12. Petra DeBoer served seven aces. Cece Huizingh had 57 assists. Kiria Elenbaas had 23 digs, while Smith had 20, Emerson DeBoer had 19, Petra DeBoer had 11, Zegunis had 11 and Huiznigh had 10. Selby and Zegunis each had four blocks.

CROSS COUNTRY

Panthers win OK Red jamboree

The West Ottawa girls won the opening OK Red jamboree with 35 points. Jenison was second with 83, followed by Rockford (86) and Grand Haven (87).

Helen Sachs won the race in 17:01.58. Arianne Olson was second in 17:12.00. Jane Olney was seventh (19:17.69) and Megan Postma was eighth (19:18.11).

The West Ottawa boys took eighth (218). Grand Haven won with 43. Connor Wooley finished 20th (17:12.60) for the Panthers.

Maroons win OK Blue jamboree

The Holland Christian boys cross country team won the first OK Blue jamboree of the season at Fruitport.

The Maroons scored 52 to hold off Hamilton (56), Allendale (57) and the rest of the field.

Hamilton's Max VanHuis won the race in 16:47.45. Holland Christian's Will Engbers was third (17:04.04). Hamilton's Abatu Dykstra was fifth (17:30.08). Holland Christian's Nathan Steen was seventh (17:40.86) and Aidan Brinks was ninth (17:43.53). Hamilton's Josh Langeland was 12th (17:45.32).

Spring Lake won the girls meet with 27. Holland Christian was fifth (135) and Hamilton was eighth (216).

Holland Christian's Alina Martinsen was 12th (21:36.45) and Alyssa Gerritsma was 15th (21:47.44).

Holland third, Chix third, Black River fourth

The Holland boys finished in third place at the Chargers Autumn Sunrise Invitational. All top five scoring runners finished in the top 35 in the D1/D2 race.

Finishing first overall in the Division 1/2 race was Noah Lambers with a time of 16:10.

Adrian Castillo was close behind in third place with a time of 16:43. Harrison Kooyer in 23rd (18:11), Alessandro Castillo in 25th (18:16) and Dylan Chmura 31st (18:28). Josh Villa (18:53) and Jack Voss (18:54) rounded out the top 7 for the team.

The Zeeland Eat girls team finished third overall with 69 points just behind Spring Lake (54) and Lowell (54). Medalists in the girl' race were Ally Kuzma (secondnd), Meredith Cook (11th), Addie Grill (13th), Emma Drnek (16th), Hayley Heinrich (27th), Cece Kuras (31st), Megan Kuzma (33rd), and Taryn DiLaura (35th).

The Black River boys finished fourth in the Division 3/4 race. Medaling for Black River were Isaac Edgingt.on 10th place with a time of 17:41, followed by Roger Hernandez 15th in 18:06, Isaac Johnson 23rd 18:45 and Owen Stimer 25th 18:58.

The Zeeland East boys were fifth in the Division 1/2 race (89 points). Medalists for the Chix were Gavin Wiersma (fourthth), Caden Guffey (15th), Dylan Walters (19th), Nick Riemersma (20th) and Dylan Veltema (32nd).

Although Black River the girls only had four runners, three of the girls medaled, Lily Laburn 10th 21:46, Nora Ballard 25th 23:41 and Camille Wolbrink 28th 24:03.

The Holland girls finished sixth. Finishing ninth overall in the Division 1/2 race was Alisa Mason with a time of 19:38. Emma Margaron finished 26th with a medal time of 20:44. Rounding out the top seven finishers for Holland were Ambria DePoy (21:31), Abby Wilson (21:58), Meredith Walters (22:22), Rylee Boersen (23:32), and Eleanor McMullen (25:18).

Panthers take eighth

On Saturday, the West Ottawa boys raced to 11 personal records under cloudy skies on the campus of Calvin College in the Cougar/Falcon Invitational. Led by medal winning senior co-captain Connor Wooley (16:53-18th place), the Panthers managed to drop their times significantly on a college course that included a serious uphill challenge. Junior co-captain Max VanGrouw shattered his own recent personal record with a time of 17:45.

BOYS SOCCER

Holland Christian 1, Allendale 0

The Maroons improved to 8-1-2 and 4-0-2 in the OK Blue with the win.

Caden Petroelje scored on an assist from Aiden Leenstra. Daniel Morgan made three saves in goal for the shutout.

Black River 3, Kalamazoo Christian 1

Goals were scored by Mike Galicia, RJ Villegas and Levi Benson. Assists went to Villegas and Brady Davidson. Levi Benson and Jake Caropepe split time in net for the win

Fennville 2, South Haven 0

Emanuel Guzman and Cesar Arredondo scored for Fennville. Juan Porrez was credited with an assist. Jose Sanchez had two saves in goal for the shutout.

Fennville 7, Coloma 0

Miguel Solis-Salazar led Fennville with three goals and an assist. Angel Villalobos had two goals and an assist. Chris Solis-Salazar also added a goal and an assist. Armando Sanchez also scored. Juan Porrez was credited with two assists. Jose Sanchez had two saves for in goal for the shutout.

Holland 8, Muskegon 0

On Tuesday night, Holland Soccer defeated Muskegon 8-0. Malakai Lopez and Luis Barajas scored two goals, and Odis Fickel, Jacob Van Hekken, Owen Ceithaml, and Michael French each converted. Fickel, VanHekken, Josiah VanHekken, and French had assists. Goalkeepers Nolan Currier and Noah Kelly shared the shut-out.

"Muskegon taught us an important lesson," said Holland coach Greg Ceithaml. "We have to pick up our pace of play and move the ball. When we do that, we can be successful."

Holland 2, Reeths-Puffer 1

After a scoreless first half, Timo Phillips scored on a header from an Owen Ceithaml corner kick. Josiah VanHekken put in a crafty back-heal to put Holland up 2-1. Reeths-Puffer countered with a goal and a scary chance for a tying goal in the last minute, but Holland held on for the win.

"It was a close match," said Holland coach Greg Ceithaml. "Reeths Puffer applied pressure, but we played well enough to win. I am especially grateful to win on Senior Night. These seniors have dedicated so much time and effort into the soccer program. Their hard work is appreciated."

The senior soccer players that were honored were: Luis Barajas, Nolan Currier, Javier Garcia, Paul Klomparens, Adrian Perez, Saul Perez, Timo Phillips and Fletcher VanHowe.

Wyoming 1, Zeeland West 0

The Dux lost the OK Green game on Tuesday.

"It was an off night for an offense that had been clicking but we just couldn't quite put it together.  Credit to Wyoming for taking us out of our game and making us play theirs," Zeeland West coach Andy Hondorp said.

Allendale 3, Hamilton 0

The Hawkeyes dropped the OK Blue matchup 3-0 to Allendale.

Grand Haven 1, West Ottawa 0

The Panthers lost the OK Red match on Thursday.

Mona Shores 3, West Ottawa 1

Andrew Merlam scored for the Panthers in the non-conference game on Saturday.

GIRLS SWIMMING

West Ottawa 180, Grandville 132

The Panthers won the OK Red dual meet. Oriana O'Mealey won the 200 freestyle in 2:03.09. Samantha Bolt won the 200 IM (2:24.05). Makenzie Baldwin won the 50 freestyle (25.26) and 100 freestyle (54.88). Kalyna Pyk won the 100 butterfly (1:02.46) and 100 backstroke (1:03.18). Lorelai Bremer won the 500 freestyle (5:25.13). Paige Swarthout won the 100 breaststroke (1:12.42).

GIRLS GOLF

Dux take second

Zeeland West placed second at the Mona Shores Jamboree held at Muskegon Country Club on Thursday.  The Dux were led by Rylee Smith with a 45.  Eve Kasten added a 49, Natalie Kernstock a 63, while Gabbi Shivers contributed a 64.

Zeeland East finished fourth led by medalist Carly Lukins with a fine score of  41 in very windy conditions.  Also scoring for the team was Katherine Rogovich who had a personal best score, Kendall Samora and Madolynne Bos.

Panthers take seventh

The West Ottawa golf team traveled to Pigeon Creek GC to compete in the Grand Haven Jamboree.  The Panthers finished 7th with a 218.   They were led by Danika Denhof with a 53, followed by Avery VanDellen with a 54, Isabella Grantham with a 55 and Ana Niziolek rounded out the scoring with a 56.

BOYS TENNIS

Zeeland East 8, GR Union 0

The Chix swept the OK Green match on Monday.

Brady Schanski won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Will Michmerhuizen won 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. Charlie Reese won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 and Levi Barense won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4.

In doubles, Alex Macy-Cam Volkers won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1. Atari Kuras-Jailen Nesbitt won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2. Dominik Reider-Parker Bronkema ton 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3. Seth Van Timmeren-Easton Beukema won by default at No. 4.

Holland 6, Reeths-Puffer 2

The Dutch won the OK Green match on Wednesday.

Aiden Sin won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Andrew Lubbers won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. James Baer won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4.

In doubles, Sam Payne-Elliot Wehrmeyer won 6-3, 7-6(5) at No. 1. Connor Huizinga-Willem Evenson won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3. Harper Prutch-Owen Baer won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4.

Hamilton 10, Greenville 1

Playing a non-conference matchup with seven doubles flights, the Hawkeyes won 10-1.

Mason Blauwkamp, Jackson Miller, Liam Kelley and Seth Lappinga all won in straight sets in singles.

BOYS WATER POLO

East Grand Rapids 12, Zeeland 8

It was a back and fourth game but the Pioneers pulled away in the second quarter and Zeeland couldn't bridge the gap.

Mason Landes led the team with three goals and Will Posthumus and Keaton Draeger each added two.  Landes also had four drawn exclusions and three steals and Will had four steals and a block.
