High school weekly rewind: Holland tennis wins opening quad

In the first competition of the season, the Holland boys varsity tennis team finished in 1st place at their own quad. Holland won 23 out of a possible 24 matches. Every flight for the Dutch finished in 1st place in their respective

"It's always great to start the season off on a good note," said Holland coach Kyle Kreps. "I'm proud of my guys and excited to see how we progress throughout the season."

Aiden Sin won at No. 1 singles, leading a sweep fo champions with Andrew Lubbers, Graham VanFassen and James Baer.

In doubles, Sam Payne and Elliot Wehrmeyer won at No. 1. Oscar Miller and Emmett Book won at No. 2. Connor Huizenga and Willem Evenson won at No. 3. Harper Prutch and Owen Baer won at No. 4. Royce Cano and Will Lubbers won at No. 5.

BOYS SOCCER

Maroons win two

Holland Christian defeated Western Michigan Christian 3-0 and NorthPointe Christian 8-0 in Saturday's Witte Tournament.

Against WMC, Lucas Freriks had two goals and Kyle Cannon had a gol and an assist.

Against NorthPointe Christian, Cannon scored twice, Freriks had a goal and an assist, Michael Pierce scored twice, while Parker Fenton, Michail Haig and Caden Petroelje each added a goal. Jordan Rees had two assists, while Elliott Cook, David VanDuinen and Jacob Gabrielse each had one.

Daniel Morgan earned the shutout in goal for both games.

Holland 6, Paw Paw 1

After dropping a game to Battle Creek Lakeview in the Portage Invitational, Holland bounced back with a 6-1 win over Paw Paw.

Jacob VanHekken opened the scoring with a goal from an assist by Fletcher VanHowe. Javier Garcia tallied from a slotted ball by Odis Fickel. Paw Paw scored before Malakai Lopez and Owen Ceithaml wrapped up the scoring in the first half. In the second half, VanHowe and Odis Fickel recorded goals.

"I am glad we responded after the first disappointing result," said Holland coach Greg Ceithaml. "Paw Paw played well, but our team had something to prove to itself. It is very important to show resilience and grit. We have a lot to work on, but the second game showed improvement."

VanHowe scored the lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Battle Creek Lakeview.

Black River 1, Hamilton 0

RJ Villegas scored on a penalty kick in the first half to propel the Rats to victory. Talan Nahal made seven saves in goal for the shutout.

Black River defeated Constantine 6-1 and Saugatuck 4-0 to open the season earlier in the week.

Mike Galicia had four goals and three assists on the day. Andrew Eklov had three goals. Charlie Riether had two goals and Clement Monie had a goal. Also earning assists were Reither with two, Brady Davidson with one, Julian Fowler with one, RJ Villegas with one and Aaron Summitt with one. Talan Nahal and Jake Caropepe split time in goal.

Zeeland West 2, Byron Center 1

The Dux defeated the Bulldogs. Sammy Salas scored twice and Micah Henry tallied an assist.

Byron Center had a late chance that hit the crossbar with seven seconds remanind as Zeeland West survived for the season-opening win.

Loy Norrix 2, West Ottawa 0

The Panthers lost the game that was called early because of severe weather.

West Ottawa also lost 2-1 to Gull Lake. Cayden Brummel scored and Justin Kuiper made 11 saves.

CROSS COUNTRY

Black River wins invite

Holland Black River Girls won the Green Division at the MCC invite.

Lily Laburn was the overall winner with a time of 22:12. Also placing for Black River were Camille Wolbrink (ninth, 24:17), Abbi Rozman (13th, 24:43), Nora Ballard (14th, 24:59), Ayla Meier (16th, 25:40) and Savannah Thelen (16th, 27:54).

In the boys race, Roger Hernandez won the overall race with a time of 17:46, Isaac Edgington was third with a time of 17:46.

Holland girls take second; boys sixth

The Holland girls cross country team raced their season opener today with a second-place finish in the Gold Division at the Muskegon Catholic Invitational. The top five scoring runners for Holland were Alisa Mason (21:37), Emma Margaron (21:40), Ambria DePoy (22:42), Abby Wilson (23:20) and Meredith Walters (24:49).

The Holland boys took sixth. The top five scoring runners for Holland were Adrian Castillo (17:27), Noah Lambers (17:29), Harrison Kooyer (19:17), Jack Voss (19:53) and Henry Mulder (20:01). The team will compete again next week Friday at the Under the Lights invitational.

West Ottawa takes 12th

A much younger and much faster West Ottawa boys cross-country team competed in their first race of the season on Friday at Portage. Led by co-captains Connor Wooley (17:01) and Max Vangrouw (18:24), the Panthers managed to grab 12th place in a field of 20 fast teams

BOYS TENNIS

West Ottawa third in Portage

The West Ottawa boys tennis team was able to take third against in the field against Mattawan, Okemos and Dexter. Okemos tied for third at the Divison 2 state finals last fall and Mattawan placed ninth.

West Ottawa beat Dexter 8-1 before falling to Mattawan 2-6 and Okemos 2-6."The level of tennis was great and there were close matches up and down the lineup," West Ottawa coach Brian Metz said.

Jake Bloomers and Cody Shurman were unbeaten at No. 3 doubls and Max McCormick and Landon Meyer were unbeaten at No. 4.

Dutch go 1-2

Holland defeated Mona Shores and lost to Byron Center and Portage Central at the Portage Central invite.

"I thought we did a lot of good things today," said Holland coach Kyle Kreps. "It's great to get put into uncomfortable situations."

Chix fourth at invite

Zeeland East scored nine points to finish fourth at the Ludington tournament.

Brady Schanski (No. 1 singles) and Levi Barense (No. 4 singles) each won two matches for the Chix.

Later at the Holt invite, Schanski finished second overall. He also won all three matches at Grand Rapids South Christian in an incredibly busy travel week for the Chix

Hamilton 7, Coopersville 1

The Hawkeyes earned the OK Blue victory, as the top three singles players, Mason Blauwkamp, Jackson Miller and Seth Lappinga each won in straight sets.

The Hawkeyes also defeated Sparta 7-1 and Cedar Springs 8-0 with the same trio leading the way.

VOLLEYBALL

Panthers win silver bracket

After a slow start to the morning, the team put together four consecutive wins. With a complete team win against Kenowa Hills, Lowell, Livonia Stevenson and Grandville to solidify the silver bracket.

West Ottawa also went 6-0 at the WMVOA invite.

Hamilton goes 1-1-1 at invite

Hamilton went 1-1-1 at the Gull Lake invite, beating Grand Rapids Union 25-16, 25-9, split with Schoolcraft 21-25, 28-26 and lost to Edwardsburg 25-22, 25-23 in a close match.

Madie Jamrog ahd 15 kills, Kaitlyn Geurink added 11 kills and Hannah Glupker had 11 digs and four aces.

GIRLS GOLF

Smith medalist; Chix finish third; Panthers fifth

The Chix hosted the 18 hole event at Pigeon Creek Golf Course. The team improved their overall team score from their Monday Invite by 46 strokes. Leading the team with a third place finish overall was Carly Lukins with a score of 83. Also scoring for the Chix were Taya Schanski with a 121 and 133ss from Madolynne Bos and Sophia Rodriguez.

Danika Denhof paced the Panthers with a 91, which earned her an eighth-place medal. Ana Niziolek added a 94, which earned her a 10th place medal on the tiebreaker. Also helping the Panthers were Avery VanDellen with a 109 and Dejah Pico with a 119.

Zeeland West's Rylee Smith led all scores and was the medalist with a 75. Izzy Zamora came in 11th with a 94. Eve Kasten added a 96 while Natalie Kernstock contributed a 97.

Panthers finish 12th

The West Ottawa Girls Varsity Golf finished in 12th place at the Sydney Carfine Memorial Tournament held at The Meadows at GVSU. The Panthers were led by Danika Denhof with a 90 followed by Ana Niziolek with a 97, Avery VanDellen with a 103 and Dejah Pico with a 110.
