High school weekly rewind: Saugatuck boys cross wins SAC title again

The Saugatuck boys cross country team claimed its 10th Southwestern Athletic Conference title in the past 11 years on Thursday.

Saugatuck scored 92 points to hold off the field with Kalamazoo Christian just behind with 96. Black River was eighth (178).

The Trailblazers did without top runner Russell VanderPoel, who also plays soccer and was competing in Saugatuck's district game.

Luke Gorgas finished eighth overall at 17:56. Charlie Stormer took 13th (18:06.26). Brennan Nor was 24th (18:37.1), Sammy Gamboa was 28th (18:54.20) and Loch Rigozzi was 29th (19:01.75).

"Luke was sick but gutted out an eighth place finish. Charlie Stormer finished 13th. Freshmen Brennan Nor moved up from 28th to 24th over the last two miles. Freshmen Sammy Gamboa moved up nine places over the last mile," Rick Bauer said.

Black River's Isaac Edgington took sixth (17:48.59) and Roger Hernandez was 11th (18:03.26).

Fennville's Mason Gardea took 20th (18:27.03).

In the girls meet, Fennville was sixth (163), Black River was seventh (170) and Saugatuck was 11th (252).

Fennville's Nidia Martinez took ninth (21:31.39). Black River's Lily LaBurn was 10th (21:38). Fennville's Merissa Mendoza was 22nd (22:17.90). Black River's Camille Wolbrink was 29th (22:45.70) and Fennville's Christina Mendoza was 33rd (22:57.45).

Saugatuck's Maya Veldt was 37th (23:14.78) and Leilani Schoonmaker was 38th (23:24.42).

BOYS SOCCER

Holland 3, Plainwell 2, OT

The Dutch survived in the district opener in overtime.

Fletcher Van Howe scored two goals including the winning goal in overtime for Holland. Josiah VanHekken had the other Holland goal, and Jacob VanHekken recorded an assist.

"Plainwell made a strong come-back, but we played well enough to win," said Holland soccer coach Greg Ceithaml. "I was happy with our effort in the overtime period. It made a difference, and we get to advance."

Holland will play Wayland in the district semifinal at 6 p.m. Monday at home.

Zeeland West 4, Hamilton 1

The Dux won the district quarterfinal match to advance to the semifinals.

Sammy Salas had a hat trick and Trigve Elkins also scored for the Dux.

Hamilton ended its season.

"Hats off to our five seniors - Malachi Lauer, Ricky Monarrez, Spencer Jensen, Kayden Burch and Joe Johnson," Hamilton coach Tyler Robinson said. "These guys did a solid job this season in helping to move the needle in the right direction for Hamilton Boys Soccer. Overall, the future is bright with the upcoming group of Hawkeyes - many of which got a ton of valuable experience this season as underclassmen at the varsity level."

Holland Christian 1, Hartford 0

The Maroons won their district opener and will face South Haven or Allegan.

Lukas Hegg scored on an assist from Lucas Freriks.

Daniel Morgan earned the shutout in goal.

Zeeland East 3, Holland 1

The Zeeland East boys soccer team defeated Holland in the OK Green Conference Tournament third-place match on Tuesday.

Caleb Swartzendruber scored twice for the Chix and dished out an assist to Isaac Fernandez, who scored the other goal for the Chix.

Holland scored 23 minutes into the second half, Owen Ceithaml hit a deflected pass into the goal for Holland.

"It was a disappointing game for us," said Holland coach Greg Ceithaml. "I don't think we played well and that was probably caused by Zeeland East's pressure. They were organized and disciplined. We didn't meet that energy tonight. We will practice and prepare for Plainwell in the first round of the district tournament."

West Ottawa 2, Hudsonville 1

The Panthers won their regular-season finale.

Andrew Spilotro scored to tie the game on an assist from Andy Solis. Alejandro Ajpop was able to find Carson Witvoet open inside of the box and Witvoet calmly placed the shot outside of the keeper's reach for the game winner.

The Panthers will face Mona Shores on Monday in the first round of districts.

Fennville 1, Hopkins 0

The Blackhawks won their district opener. Miguel Solis Salazar scored in the second half for the game-winner. Juan Porrez was credited with the assist. Jose Sanchez had seven saves in goal for the shutout.

Fennville will face the Delton-Parchment winner on Tuesday at South Haven.

Black River 4, Coloma 0

In the district opener, Black River moves on to the district semifinals which they will host on Tuesday.  Goals were scored tonight by Charlie Reither with two, Mike Galicia and Ty Elmer.

Assists went to RJ Villegas with 2 and Galicia. Talan Nahal and Jake Caropepe played in net to earn the shutout.

No. 15 Fennville 3, Kalamazoo Hackett 2

Chris Solis-Salazar, Angel Villalobos and Juan Porrez all scored for Fennville, ranked No. 15 in Divison 3. Emanuel Guzman and Jose Fernandez were each credited with an assist. Jose Sanchez had three saves in goal.

Black River 7, Bridgman 0

Julian Fowler and Brady Davidson each scored two goals. Charlie Reither, Levi Benson, and RJ Villegas each scored one goal.Assists went to Fowler, Davidson, Reither, Villegas, Mike Galicia, Dominic Pietri. Talan Nahal was in goal to earn the shutout.

CROSS COUNTRY

Dux win Ottawa/Kent invite; girls second

The Zeeland West boys won the Ottawa County bracket at the Ottawa/Kent Invitational at Calvin.

The Dux scored 27 to finish ahead of Jenison by one points. West Ottawa was third with 97.

Zeeland West's Chase Holwerda won the race in 16:38.90. Jack DeKruyter was fifth (17:03.05), followed by Robert Dodd (17:05.19), Caleb Smith (17:10.62) and Keagan Smith (17:14.71).

West Ottawa's Connor Wooley (16th place, 17:43) led the way for the Panthers with Max VanGrouw (19th, 18:01) and sophomore Ethan Gerlach (22nd, 18:14).

In the girls meet, Zeeland West was second (55) behind Unity Christian (37). Holland Calvary took sixth (174).

Zeeland West's Bella Hoffer won the race in 19:45.97. Tessa Reindfliesch was eighth (21:09.25).

Hamilton boys win invite

The Hamilton boys won the Wayland invite with a score of 27, holding off Wayland (43) and the six-team field.

Max VanHuis won the race in 17:02.37, going 1-2 with Abatu Dykstra (17:34.65). Josh Langeland was sixth (18:05.50) , Parker Matheny was seventh (18:07.35) and Brody Crandall was 11th (18:24.94).

The Hamilton girls finished fourth (63) behind Hopkins (35) and Wayland (40) and ahead of Fennville (88).

Trina Farris took second overall (21:23.43). Emma Heyereman was 11th (23:35.24).

Fennville's Merissa Mendoza was ninth (23:12.27) and Christina Mendoza was 12th (23:42.74).

GIRLS SWIMMING

West Ottawa 186, Caledonia 107

The Panthers won the OK Red dual meet on senior night.

Makenzie Baldwin won the 200 IM (2:17.12) and 500 freestyle (5:19.41). Kalyna Pyk won the 50 freestyle (25.15) and 100 backstroke (1:03.53). . Rogan McLean won the 200 freestyle (2:10.91). Elaina Dishinger won diving (196.25 points). Lorelei Bremer won the 100 butterfly (1:03.65). Paige Swarthout won the 100 breaststroke (1:12.67).

Zeeland 118, Spring Lake 67

Zeeland's Peyton Weenum won the 200 freestyle (2:13.34). Miah Hutt won the 50 freestyle (27.13). Sadie Huizenga won diving (218.35). Madison Ensing won the 100 butterfly (1:01.56) and the 100 breaststroke (1:11.20). Abigail Brinks won the 100 backstroke (1:04.86).

Hamilton 116, Holland 59

Hamilton won the OK Rainbow meet at Holland Community Aquatic Center as Holland celebrated its senior night.

Hamilton's Addison Grabinski won the 200 freestyle (2:11.82) and 500 freestyle (5:53.97). Emma Reilly won the 200 IM (2:35.65). Grace Langeland won the 100 butterfly (1:07.63). Lydia Lucas won the 100 freestyle (1:00.14). Jocelyn Borg won the 100 breaststroke (1:15.73).

Holland senior Eva Whiteman won the 50 freestyle (26.42). Natalie Legg won the 100 backstroke (1:06.10).

VOLLEYBALL

Holland Christian 3, Spring Lake 1

The Maroons defeated the Lakers 25-27, 25-13,25-11,25-15 in the OK Green Conference tournament on Tuesday.

Avery Huisman had 11 kills and seven aces. Tianna Stygstra hit .375. Annabel Pierec had nine kills and four aces. Sophia Pierce had six kills and to blocks.

"We started out slow, playing hesitant and non-aggressive. I knew it was not my team. We did not deserve to win the first, good job for Spring Lake on pusing us through that. Then we reset and played our game the rest of the way," Holland Christian coach Gerrit VanKlaveren said. "Avery Huisman led the way with a great all around effort. Tianna Stygstra came to play today and it was fantastic to watch. Reese Steenwyk stepped into the game today and showed when she is on - watch out."

Zeeland East 3, Muskegon 0

The Chix opened the OK Green Conference tournament with a 25-4, 25-5, 25-6 win.

Reilly Zegunis had 12 aces and Emerson DeBoer had 11. Katie Carlson had seven kills and Brylee Selby had six. Cece Huizingh had 10 assists and Morgan Mazeikis had nine.

Zeeland West splits

The Dux defeated Spring Lake 25-16, 25-15 and lost to Holland Christian 25-23, 25-12 on Thursday in non-conference play.

Ally Yonker had 11 kills. Lindsey Houle had 26 assists and 10 digs. Lindy Gulker had 11 digs. Nevaeh Bakker had three blocks and Claire Story served six aces.

West Catholic 3, Hamilton 1

The Hawkeyes dropped their OK Blue Conference tournament match 25-16, 23-25, 25-16, 25-16.

Hamilton's Madie Jamrog had eight kills and 28 digs. Jess Berens served four aces.

Caledonia 3, West Ottawa 0

The Panthers lost on senior night 25-16, 25-23, 25-16, dropping to 4-2 in the OK Red.

"The team had a hard time recovering from the emotions of our senior night," West Ottawa coach Kaitlyn Lawton said. "The slow start to this match was hard to fight even with the best effort from the team. The consistency and defense of Caledonia was a little too much tonight. We get another shot at them in the conference tournament next week."

Reeths-Puffer 3, Holland 0

The Dutch dropped to 3-5 in the OK Green after losing 25-15, 25-22, 25-21 in the conference tournament.

Leading the Dutch were Ari Gray with three aces, seven kills and 10 digs. Jada Livingston with six kills and 11 digs. Libby LeFebre with 11 kills and Makayla Peart with three aces and 15 digs.

Saugatuck splits

The Trailblazers lost to Watervliet 25-7, 25-8 on Thursday and also defeated Coloma 25-23, 22-25, 15-12.

Alyssa Ries had 20 digs. Haley Rivera had 13 assists, six kills and 16 digs. Kennedy Gustafson had 12 kills. Erin Moerler had seven digs.

BOYS WATER POLO

Grand Haven 13, Zeeland 3

In a night of a lot of crossbars and good saves by the opposition, Zeeland fell to Grand Haven. A strong second quarter had the Chix and Dux down by just two at halftime, but multiple missed shots resulting in counter goals opened up the lead for the Buccaneers.

Mason Landes, Keaton Draeger, and Carter Freeman were the goal scorers for Zeeland. Ethan Streeter had four steals. Jacob Manschesky had a strong night in cage making nine saves and had three steals.

No. 2. Jenison 15, West Ottawa 3

On Monday, Caiden Jones got the scoring started for West Ottawa in the second quarter. Soren Van Dam was busy in the cage for West Ottawa, making 17 saves on the night, including a 5-meter save.

Ethan Elms led the Panthers in scoring, notching two goals for West Ottawa.

West Ottawa 16, Portage 0

The Panthers won on senior day, honoring Soren Van Dam, Dylan Markovic and Andrew Feliu.

Van Dam was blemish-free in cage (10 saves) before relinquishing his position to play in the field for the fourth quarter; Grady Armstrong secured the shutout (three saves) as the Panthers defense managed 12 steals.

Feliu lead the way with five goals, followed by Ethan Elms and Landon Kipker, who scored three goals apiece. Caiden Jones made three assists and added a goal. Dylan McLean scored his first goal of the season.
