High school wrestling: Palmetto Ridge secure 18th straight CCAC title

Head coach Blaine Ison and the Palmetto Ridge Bears continued their run of dominance at the Collier County Athletic Conference wrestling meet on Wednesday night at Naples High School.

Palmetto Ridge took home their 18th straight CCAC tournament, while eight individual wrestlers captured titles for the Bears.

“It was a great day today,” Ison said. “We went out there and wrestled tough. (We) had 12 out of 14 guys in the finals, so that’s always a good sign that things are going well. We just want to keep everyone healthy, get through the next week, and keep moving forward postseason.”

Just four days ago, the Bears captured their first 3A team state dual title after knocking off defending state champions and top-ranked South Dade and Wellington in back-to-back matches.

“Coming off that you know, the kids want to show that their hard work is paying off and they want to keep it going,” Ison said.

Xavier Barnhart (106), Tyler Washburn (113), Bernardo Barnhart (120), Jean Valoria (126), Demetri Zertopoulis (138), Brennan Van Hoecke (145), Carson Miller (152), and Roman Garcia (160) all won titles for the Bears.

Then Austin Foye was the final Palmetto Ridge wrestler to place first at 285, after pinning Barron Collier's Dominick Dekker at 1:11.

“They work hard every day, so that's what they expect from them themselves,” Ison said on his team’s ability to compete at every weight class.

Barron Collier had three first-place finishers -- Lucas Giles at 132, Cory Cannan at 170, and Jeremy Urena at 182.

Other CCAC winners on the evening included Jaiden Musse of Lely at 195 and Colin Koneski of Naples at 220.
