High school wrestling rewind: Holland, West Ottawa each open with two wins

HOLLAND - The Holland wrestling team jumped won two very close duals to open the season on Wednesday. Holland defeated their first conference foe Zeeland East 47-33, and then Coopersville 38-34.

Going 2-0 on the night for Holland Varsity squad was Aiden Segovia, Josh Keller, Julian Segovia, Joel Morin, Luis Barajas, and Ali Sakhi Zada. Going 1-0 was Alessandro Fillmore.

"The camaraderie, heart, passion, and excitement that this team showed tonight was great to see. The coaches are very excited about this team, and look forward to seeing them progress each week," Holland coach Nick Lewin said.

West Ottawa wins two

A packed crowd gathered to watch West Ottawa walk away with two dual wins at home for Community Night. The Panthers defeated Montague 54-27 and finished up the night decisively beating Godwin Heights 63-13.

Undefeated for the men were Payton VanBuskirk (120) Anthony Jaramillo (132) Owen Foster (165) Kendrick Bronkhorst (190) and Jakob Gaytan (285). Jaramillo also upset #11 Chris Aebig of Montague.

On the women side, the Lady Panthers squared off with some showcase matches against Montague's girls team. Winners in the night were Abriel Mier and sixth-ranked Abby Vander Zwaag, who defeated No. 7 Ava Pelton.

"Overall it was a great night for us. We really got to showcase our 'Pantherstyle' of wrestling. We were technical and aggressive.  And our ladies had a great test to see where they are competition wise with some stellar match ups," West Ottawa coach Ryan Lancaster said.

Dux split duals

Zeeland West opened the season with their first OK Conference matches against Reeths Puffer and West Catholic. The Dux fell to Reeths-Puffer 73-6 and defeated West Catholic 48-33.

Going undefeated was Kham Phothisan, Justin Sanchez, Ryan Dalman,  Going 1-1 was Christian Sam, Nate Machiele, Brody Smeyers, Gerrit Hartman, and Evan Walters. Going undefeated on JV was Luke Marsman, Sam Taylor, and Kegan Cornell. Going 1-1 was Brenden Arensen.
