High school wrestling: Stuart Cramer grapples way to Big South 3A championship

The Big South 3A wrestling tournament was held Jan. 26 at North Gaston High School. Stuart Cramer took the overall team title, scoring 161 points on its way to a Big South 3A crown.

Following the Storm included North Gaston (142.0), Forestview (140.0), South Point (128.0), Kings Mountain (111.5), Ashbrook (73.0), Crest (47.0) and Hunter Huss (38.0).

Below are results for each weight class.

106 pounds: After earning a bye, North Gaston’s Kaden Carpenter defeated Ashbrook’s Brooks Pollard and Charlie Price of South Point via fall en route to a conference title. Price placed second, with Forestview’s Blake Williams and Pollard of Ashbrook claiming third and fourth, respectively.

113 pounds: Stuart Cramer’s Charlie Sly defeated Kings Mountain’s Lucas Sanders by major decision (12-0) in the semifinal round and Caleb Haynes of North Gaston via fall in the final, claiming a league title in the process.

Haynes placed second, with Forestview’s Trevon Bowers taking third. Sanders of Kings Mountain took fourth.

120 pounds: Stuart Cramer’s Ryan Denton earned a 7-3 decision over North Gaston’s Garrett Carpenter to claim the Big South 3A wrestling championship at 120 pounds. After earning a fall in his opening round match against Forestview’s Noah Empson, Denton claimed a 9-1 major decision over South Point’s Aiden Houghton to earn a spot in the final.

Carpenter finished second, followed by Kings Mountain’s Tyler Furman and Houghton of South Point, respectively.

126 pounds: Kings Mountain’s Jordan Moore earned a sudden victory over South Point’s Ryley Goble to take the 126-pound title at the Big South 3A wrestling tournament. He defeated Forestview’s LIncoln Wilson in the semifinal round before defeating Goble in the final.

Goble was second, with Alex Iannacone of Stuart Cramer and Forestview’s Lincoln Wilson taking third and fourth, respectively.

132 pounds: Stuart Cramer’s Matt Karagias was dominant on his way to a league championship, earning a technical fall in the semifinal round before getting a fall in the final over North Gaston’s James Weaver.

Ashbrook’s Parker York finished third, with Aydin Regusters of Forestview placing fourth.

138 pounds: Forestview’s Jacob Massengill outlasted Tripp Norwood of North Gaston on Wednesday, claiming the Big South 3A championship via 1-0 decision.

Massengill won via 11-2 major decision in opening round competition over South Point’s Ashton Carter, before advancing over Jacob Hamrick of Kings Mountain via fall.

Along with Norwood and Hamrick, who placed second and third respectively, Stuart Cramer’s Ethan Ward was fourth.

145 pounds: Stuart Cramer’s Zach Karagias defeated Trent Smith of Forestview via technical fall to claim the 145-pound title on Wednesday. He defeated Crest’s Mason Keevill by way of a fall in opening round competition, following that by doing the same to Ashbrook’s Jashon Jeffries to earn his spot in the conference final.

Smith took second, followed by Lawson Georgia of South Point and Adam Phillips of Kings Mountain in third and fourth, respectively.

152 pounds: Following a strong season on the gridiron, Forestview’s Jesse Osborne capped his senior wrestling season with a Big South 3A championship. Osborne defeated North Gaston’s Steven Mairena by way of a 4-2 decision to claim the 152-pound crown.

Osborne defeated Donovan Cavendar of Kings Mountain via fall in opening round competition, followed by a 4-2 decision over Ashbrook’s Khadin Boone in the semifinals.

Boone took third, with South Point’s Simon Dellinger placing fourth.

160 pounds: Ashbrook’s Elijah Antis outlasted Tommy Hall of North Gaston to claim the 160-pound crown. Antis needed a 15-13 decision to earn the win, this after beating Crest’s Carson Wince via fall in the semifinal round.

Wince placed third, with Forestview’s Ryan Burgett finishing fourth.

170 pounds: South Point’s Ashton Knauf took a 4-2 decision over Courtney George of Hunter Huss to claim the 170-pound title. Knauf took a 9-0 major decision over Kings Mountain’s Jake Lloyd, before earning a 4-3 decision over North Gaston’s Trever Adams.

Adams placed third, with Forestview’s Landon Hudock taking fourth.

182 pounds: Jonathan O’Shea of Stuart Cramer took care of business in the 182-pound division, defeating Kings Mountain’s Javier Currie via fall to win a conference title. He defeated Forestview’s Brian Moore in the semifinal round.

Following O’Shea and Currie were South Point’s Zayvien Ziglar and Moore, who placed third and fourth, respectively.

195 pounds: Kings Mountain’s Peyton Fisher is the 195-pound champion, this after taking his conference final via disqualification. He defeated Stuart Cramer’s Pesamino Brock with a fall in the semifinal round.

Forestview’s Noah Comer placed second, with Brock and South Point’s Shane Wilson taking third and fourth, respectively.

220 pounds: Crest’s Lucas Russell finished a dominant run through Big South 3A with a fall over South Point’s Ethan Thagard in the 220-pound final. He also defeated Colin Ardrey of Ashbrook on his way to a Big South 3A title.

Ardrey wound up third, with Forestview’s Austin Bradley taking fourth.

285 pounds: Hunter Huss heavyweight Giovanni Bernal remained undefeated, taking wins via fall over North Gaston’s Zachary Magaha followed by Jacob Brindle of Stuart Cramer to claim the conference’s 285-pound crown.

Finishing third and fourth was Magaha and Dariyon Black of Kings Mountain, respectively.
