High schools: Scholar-athletes awarded; playoff updates in the Central Section

James Cranford of Kingsburg High and Morgan Trigueiro of Caruthers were the top winners of the Central Section Scholar-Athlete Awards announced May 1 at The Gardens in Tulare.

They were chosed by a scholarship committee that looks at grades, athlete involvement and community service.

Cranford has a 4.02 GPA and played football, basketball, baseball and track and field.

He volunteered more than 300 hours with various organizations.

Trigueiro was a four-year varsity player on the basketball, softball and volleyball teams. She maintained a 4.09 GPA and raised more than $90,000 for the Caruthers District Fair and contributed to other community organizations.

Cranford and Trigueiro each received a $1,000 scholarship. They were chosen from a list of finalists representing a boy and a girl from each league in the section. Each finalist received a $500 scholarship. Here are the finalists from the Fresno area:

Postseason updates

Boys golf: In the Division I area tournament at Valley Oaks Golf Course on Monday, Logan Capshew of Clovis East was third with a round of 77. Miciah Saltzman of Arroyo Grande was the champion with a score of 72. In Division III, Joseph Hart of Edison won a four-hole playoff with a round of 78. Bakersfield Christian won the team title with a score of 441. The Division II tournament was held on Tuesday.

Boys volleyball: The section championships will take place on Thursday. On Tuesday, top-seed Clovis East hosts No. 5 Clovis West and No. 2 Clovis will face No. 3 Sanger in the other Division I semifinal match. In Division II, No. 13 Washington Union visits No. 1 San Luis Obispo and No. 2 Fresno Christian hosts No. 6 Arroyo Grande. Match times are 6 p.m.

Badminton: It’s down to the semifinals. Top-seed Clovis East faced No. 4 Clovis West, while No. 3 Clovis North visited No. 2 Buchanan. The winners of those matches will play for the title on Thursday.

Track and field: Clovis East is hosting the Division I championship on Friday. Events begin at 4 p.m. Other meets are Division II (San Luis Obispo), Division III (Nipomo) and Division IV (Central Valley Christian). The section meet is May 20 at Veterans Memorial Stadium at Buchanan, same site as the state meet May 26-27.

Boys tennis: Championships will be decided this week, capped by No. 1 Clovis East hosting No. 2 San Luis Obispo on Tuesday in Division I. Other matchups include No. 7 San Joaquin Memorial visiting No. 1 Bakersfield Christian (D-II), No. 1 Mission Prep vs. No. 3 Orcutt (D-III), No. 3 Reedley at No. 1 Fresno Christian (D-IV) and No. 1 Orosi vs. No. 3 Chowchilla (D-V). The section individual tournament is Friday-Saturday at Immanuel.

Baseball, softball playoffs

The Central Section Office will announce pairings for baseball and softball playoffs on Saturday.

Playoffs begin May 16.

The baseball championships will held in Visalia at Rawhide Ballpark from May 25-May 27..

Softball will take place at Margie Wright Diamond on May 26 and May 27.

Typically the baseball championships would be held at Fresno State, but the Bulldogs are hosting the Mountain West championships.
