A 4-year-old girl is in extremely critical condition and her mother is dead after a high-speed traffic collision Tuesday night in southeast Phoenix, police officials reported.

The woman, who was not identified by police, was attempting to turn left onto 32nd Avenue from Southern Avenue just before 8 p.m. when a Chevrolet Camaro driven by 18-year-old Eulalio Juarez Rodriguez collided into her vehicle, pushing it into a nearby wooden pole, police said.

The woman died on scene from her injuries. Her 4-year-old girl, strapped in a car seat in the back of the vehicle, suffered a life-threatening injury and was taken to a hospital.

Juarez Rodriguez, who was heading west in the Camaro at more than 115 mph just seconds before the collision, survived the crash, according to police. He was arrested by authorities and later booked into jail on suspicion of manslaughter.

Officers do not suspect impairment was a factor.

The fatal collision is one of several high-speed traffic incidents that have taken place in Valley communities in just the past month.

Notably, the deaths of two elderly Mesa drivers struck by a vehicle driving over 100 mph on March 22 and that of a 16-year-old struck by a high-speed Dodge Charger on March 13 mark similar incidents of this ongoing problem.
