High-speed rail work ties up roads in central, downtown Fresno. Here’s what to expect

More utility work associated with construction of California’s high-speed rail route will tie up several streets in central and downtown Fresno in August and September.

Daytime lane and road work was scheduled to begin Monday in the area of Fresno and G streets between Highway 99 and downtown, while intermittent nighttime lane closures were to start Monday night near H Street, Belmont and Weber avenues near Roeding Park in central Fresno.

The latest work announced by the California High-Speed Rail Authority and its contractor, Tutor-Perini / Zachry / Parsons, is in addition to ongoing construction in Fresno and throughout the central San Joaquin Valley.

The daytime work near downtown includes the closure of G Street between Stanislaus and Fresno streets, as well as closure of an eastbound lane of Fresno Street east of G Street. Construction will be happening from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Sept. 8.

Traffic heading north on G Street will be detoured west on Fresno Street, then north on E Street, and then east on Stanislaus Street back onto G Street. Southbound traffic on G Street will be sent west on Stanislaus, south on E Street, and then east on Fresno Street back to G Street.

A short distance to the north, multiple closures are planned for nighttime work along Weber and Belmont avenues and H Street from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Oct. 9. That work includes:

  • Intermittent lane closures along northbound Weber Avenue between Belmont and Thorne avenues.

  • Intermittent lane closures along H Street between Belmont and Palm avenues.

  • Intermittent lane closures along Belmont Avenue between Farris and Safford avenues.

  • Intermittent lane and road closures along southbound Weber Avenue between Belmont Avenue and H Street.

Drivers heading east on Belmont Avenue to get to southbound H Street will be detoured north on Golden State Boulevard, then east on Olive Avenue, and then south on Weber Avenue to H Street.

Traffic heading north on H Street to go east on Belmont Avenue will face a detour that first goes west on Belmont, then around the Belmont traffic circle and back east on Belmont, according to the rail authority and contractor.

Signage will be in place at both construction areas, and flaggers will also be directing traffic at the Belmont/Weber/H Street zone. Property owners and business operators will continue to have access to their sites during the work.
