Highland, Nordonia girls golf advance to state; Firestone wins City Series volleyball crown

Division I district tournament at Brookledge

Highland is headed back to the Division I state tournament, and Nordonia has booked its place in Columbus for the first time

.The Hornets and Knights advanced to the state tournament by earning top four finishes Thursday at Brookledge Golf Course in Cuyahoga Falls.

A windy day led to high scores. No golfers finished below even-par 71 at Brookledge, and only seven golfers shot rounds below 80.

Magnificat won the district title with a score of 317. Highland was district runner-up at 328, and North Canton Hoover (331) and Nordonia (334) also advanced.

The race for the individual title came down to a duel between Highland's Isabella Goyette and Magnificat's Cara Heistenkamp. Heistenkamp shot a one-over-par 72 to edge Goyette (74) for medalist honors. Hoover's Ava Kerlip finished third with a 76.

Individually, the top four golfers not on qualifying teams also advanced to Columbus. Green's Ava Pulley scored one of the spots, along with Solon's Kaitlin Kormuth at 78. Gianna Reginelli of Cleveland St. Joseph Academy advanced with a 79.

After Avon's Aubrie Rush and Kent Roosevelt's Madolyn Kost each shot rounds of 80, Rush birdied both holes in a two-hole playoff to claim the final state berth.

The Division I girls state golf tournament will take place Oct. 21 and 22 at The Ohio State University's Gray Course.

VOLLEYBALL

Firestone 25-25-21-25, Ellet 22-18-25-21

Seniors Emani Myers, Mariska Capper, Savannah Diamond Akia Burton led Firestone (13-7) to a win over Ellet (9-8) in the City Series Postseason Final on Thursday night inside the new Garfield High School gymnasium.

Myers was named the City Series Player of the Year before the match, and then totaled 16 kills, 10 digs, three blocks and two service aces.

Capper contributed 21 serve receptions, 16 digs, 15 service points and two aces.

Burton had 21 assists and five digs. Diamond added in eight kills and three blocks.

Ellet jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set, but Firestone rallied to take a 9-6 lead with eight points in a row en route to a three-point victory.

Firestone overcame a 10-9 deficit in the second set by outscoring Ellet 16-8 for the remainder of that set. Ellet took the third set and then Firestone won the fourth set.

“I saw a lot of discipline, a lot of good chemistry and a lot of aggressive play from our team,” said Firestone coach Stacey McMillan, who is also the mother of Emani Myers.

Ellet senior Anna Trowbridge finished with 16 kills and junior Kaitlynn Wright had 11 service points and six assists. Ellet’s other statistical leaders were senior Kierstynn Stephanoff (11 digs), senior Arianna Smith (four aces) and junior Shaniya Cherry (three blocks).

The Falcons also received solid contributions from juniors Ruth Adams, Honesty Bell, Gina Goggins and Daryn Wright and sophomores Tiara Williams and Hannah Kozlowski.

McMillan, the City Series Coach of the Year, was pleased to see the “younger plays stepping up on the court.”

Adams was active around the court and finished with 13 serve receptions, nine service points and seven digs. Williams totaled 10 service points and four aces, Goggins had 10 assists, Wright had six kills and five blocks and Bell spiked down five kills.

Highland 25-25-25, Copley 20-15-20

Visiting Highland improved to 18-3 overall and 14-0 in the Suburban League American Conference. The Hornets went undefeated in the SLAC in 2021 and 2022.

Highland was led defensively by libero Corinne Mutch who had a team-high 16 digs. Sydney Smith totaled nine digs and a team-high six aces. Setters Megan Scavuzzo (17) and Ashley Shefferly (16) had a combined 33 assists, and Alayna Tessena led the Hornets offense at the net with 18 kills.
