VOLLEYBALL
Highland 3, Copley 1
If Tuesday is any indication, the Suburban League American Conference crown isn’t going anywhere soon.
Three-time reigning volleyball champion Highland pushed its league lead to two games after a 25-14, 22-25, 25-15, 27-25 four-set thriller over the Copley.
The win gave the Hornets (9-1, 7-0) a cushion over Copley (9-3, 5-2) and Tallmadge (10-3, 5-2).
“Copley is a really good team, they’re always scrappy,” Highland coach Laura Merk said. “I know they’ve been young the past couple of years, so they’ve got momentum the next couple of years. Being able to win in four sets against a good team and dominating in a couple is really, really good and gives our girls a lot of confidence.”
Alayna Tessena (21 kills, 15 digs) was her usual dominating self for the Hornets. Corrine Mutch (17 digs), Megan Scavuzzo (28 assists), Ashley Shefferly (19 assists) and Sydney Smith (11 points, 4 aces) were strong as well.
Copley had a huge showing from Shelby Emich (25 assists, 6 blocks, 10 points, 6 aces). A senior center, Emich also hit a milestone with 1,003 career assists.
“She was an outside hitter for me the first two years, so she would have been in the 2,000s by now,” Copley coach Antoine Pastor said. “She’s such an athletic kid. She can do basically whatever I need her to. Shelby works hard. She grinds constantly. She’s always watching film. She’s just a kid that loves to compete and be the best she possibly can.”
Tallmadge 25-25-25, Barberton 11-14-13
Zoe Rensel continues to be a strong presence in Tallmadge’s attack with 20 kills. Tallmadge also received solid efforts from Lexi Gray (20 assists), Maya Dexter (21 digs) and Alex Pavlik (four aces).
Skylar Marble paced Barberton with five kills, 12 digs, six service points and one ace. Leah Stempfel had 12 digs and Haley Lorenzo added nine assists and one ace.
Aurora 22-25-18-25-15, Revere 25-23-25-16-11
Aurora (9-5, 5-2 SLAC) rallied to win the match by taking the final two sets. Brooke Gecina and Mia Devine led the way at the net with 16 kills and 13 kills, respectively.
Aurora’s Ollie Salgado had 45 assists and three aces, Cailor Roche also had three aces and Emerson Spiesz contributed 18 digs.
Archbishop Hoban 25-25-25, Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph 8-11-10
Giana Muthersbaugh totaled 14 service points, 11 aces and 13 digs to guide the Knights (9-4) to a win.
Hoban’s Sophia Day (18 assists) and Molly Kennedy (seven kills) also made an impact.
Wadsworth 25-25-25, Twinsburg 20-17-15
Aly Snyder totaled 33 assists, seven digs, two blocks and two aces for the Grizzlies (7-4, 5-1, SLNC).
Wadsworth’s Lauren Decker had 16 kills and seven digs and Ellie Zuro contributed 13 kills.
The Grizzlies also received solid play from Mya Garcia (five kills, six service points, three aces); Kenzie Brandenburg (20 digs, 11 service points, four aces) and Lydia Wiita (two blocks).
Firestone 25-25-25, Buchtel 18-24-17
Emani Myers had 15 kills and had 10 service points to lead the Falcons (6-5, 3-0) in a City Series match.
Firestone’s Gina Goggins contributed 21 assists, Tiara Williams had seven digs and Savannah Diamond added three aces and two blocks.
Ellet 25-25-25, North 7-17-9
Kaitlynn Wright had a career-high 26 service points and 19 aces to lead Ellet (5-6, 3-1) in a City Series match.
Wright also had 10 assists and five digs. Ellet’s Anna Trowbridge, Olivia Hahn and Shaniya Cherry had three kills apiece.
