Highland wins first title in 42 years; Hoban stays unbeaten; Jackson hands Stow first loss

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Highland 63, Tallmadge 38

The Hornets (17-0, 11-0) won at least a share of the Suburban League American Conference title with Saturday's win over the Blue Devils (2-11, 2-8).

It's the first league title for Highland since 1980.

"It's just a special year we've had," Hornets coach James Madison said. "The girls have put in a lot of hard work the last several years to put themselves in a position to win the first championship in 42 years. I'm just really proud of the effort the girls put in."

Kennedy Morgan (24 points) led all scorers for Highland. Grace Madison had seven assists, Alayna Tessena had 15 rebounds and Anya VanKirk had 10 boards.

Tallmadge was led by Abby Caruso's 12 points.

Jackson 54, Stow 48

The Polar Bears (10-5) knocked the Bulldogs (15-1) from the unbeaten ranks thanks to Megan Campbell (15 points), Leena Patibandla (14) and Lauren Pallotta (12). Stow was paced by Kristin Chmielewski (23) and Alaina Ray (10).

Hudson 55, Twinsburg 40

The Explorers (6-8, 4-3 SLNC) had strong play from Ali Menendez (19 points) and Paige Albrecht (11). Logan Pride led all scorers for the Tigers (0-15, 0-9) with 22.

Barberton 43, Kent Roosevelt 41

Laney Kaisk's 11 points led the Magics (6-8, 3-8 SL American). Lexie Canning led all scorers for the Rough Riders (6-9, 3-8) with 16.

Copley 49, Aurora 40

Copley (9-6, 7-4 SLAC) was paced by Shelby Emich (15 points) and Emily Kerekes (13). Aurora (7-6, 7-3) received 18 points from Ava Ryncarz and 14 from Sam Stask.

Archbishop Hoban 60, Kettering Archbishop Alter 59

Lanae Riley scored 22 points and Emma Rasmussen had 13 points to lead the Knights (15-0) in the Battle in the Hawk’s Nest All Catholic Prep Challenge at Columbus Bishop Hartley.

St. Vincent-St. Mary 55, Youngstown Cardinal Mooney 18

Jazmin Torres and Cameron Jones scored 11 points each and Jenna Bycznski added 10 to lead STVM (11-3) in the Battle in the Hawk’s Nest All Catholic Prep Challenge at Hartley.

Walsh Jesuit 47, Bishop Watterson 46

The Warriors (13-3) won a tough game in the Battle in the Hawk’s Nest All Catholic Prep Challenge at Hartley thanks to Kara Courtad (13 points) and Megan Taraba (11).

Cloverleaf 53, Coventry 15

Tori Smith went over the 1,000-point career mark when she scored 12 for the Colts (12-5, 8-2) in Metro Athletic Conference play against the Comets (1-13, 0-9). Teammate Laurell Brown led all scorers with 17.

Ellet 48, Mogadore 38

Ellet (11-5) had double-figure efforts from Caitlyn Holmes (18) and Mya Knight (10). Mogadore's top scorers were Jocelyn Lawrentz (16) and Brooklyn McIntyre (12).

CVCA 65, Tuslaw 38

The visiting Royals (10-4, 7-1 PAC-7) won with three in double figures: Gia Casalinova (18 points), Joi Williams (18) and Kylie Bettinger (12).

North Canton Hoover 48, GlenOak 39

Grace Craig scored 22 points to lead the Vikings.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Woodridge 68, Coventry 59

Ben Kiser scored 21 points and Owen Snyder had 12 for the Bulldogs. The Comets were paced by Mahilo Oluic's 19 points and Kamden McAfee's 14.

Walsh Jesuit 65, Cleveland JFK 15

The Warriors (11-2) had big nights from Rico Pickett (18 points) and Tyler Halligan (12). Max Matta also had 10 in the win.

Centerville 52, St. Vincent-St. Mary 46

The defending Division I state champion Elks topped the defending Division II state champion Irish at LeBron James Arena.

Indiana recruit Gabe Cupps (19 points), Florida State recruit Tom House (13) and Quinn Hafner (11) led Centerville. STVM's Lance Hayes scored 18 points, and Sencire Harris and Darius Stratford each had eight.

WRESTLING

Josh Hephner Memorial

Copley's Javaan Yarbrough (106 pounds), Lake's Dominic Artman (120), Medina's Andrew Supers (144) and Southeast's Spencer Mesaros (215) won individual titles. Louisville won the 33-team tournament thanks to first-place showings from Kolton Barker (113), Pito Castro (132), Dominic Hoffarth (138), Brenden Severs (165), Blake Scheffer (190) and Cameron Brazek (285).

West Holmes Invitational

James Scavuzzo (157 pounds) and William Scavuzzo (165) grabbed individual titles to lead Highland to a team title in the 15-team field.
