Highlighting the 10 best football plays Todd Egan (6 TDs) made in South Shore Tech's win

HANOVER — To say Todd Egan had a big day for the South Shore Tech football team in a 48-27 win against Bourne on Thursday is an understatement.

The junior scored six touchdowns -- five rushing and another on a kick return. For the day, he finished with more than 200 all-purpose yards and turned 11 offensive touches (10 carries and one reception) into 158 yards.

Egan heaped much of the praise for his performance onto his offensive line, which included Chris White, Owen Lemere, Tyler Holmes, Finn Hagan, Cliff Monroe and Lucas Jones.

“We have the best offensive line in the world,” said Egan. “They’re violent, they pull. Our line is great. I love them.”

“They were fantastic,” said South Shore Tech coach Matt Doyle of his offensive line. “I felt like every single time our offense touched the ball in the first half they were getting positive yardage, continuing drives and finishing drives.

“All those yards you see from those skill guys starts with the big boys up front. I was proud of the way they started the game.”

Even with the stellar play of the big guys up front, Egan had a laundry list of big plays. Let’s break down his best plays from the day.

1. 82-yard kick return touchdown

The Vikings (1-1) looked like they could be in for a battle with the Canalmen (1-1). Bourne held a 7-6 lead with 8:22 left in the first quarter following a 65-yard TD run by Craig Hill (15 carries, 148 yards). But on the ensuing kickoff, Egan returned it 82 yards for a score. Coupled with a 2-point conversion from junior Riley Siereveld, the Vikings took a 14-7 lead they never gave back.

“I think my favorite (play) was the kickoff return because that one I told them all,” said Egan. “I said, ‘I’m going to go out there and as soon as I get the ball on the kickoff I’m scoring it.’

“I just dipped my shoulder and (the defender) crossed inside wicked hard, so I bounced it out and there was a lot of green.”

2. 17-yard TD run in the fourth quarter

In the fourth quarter with the game in hand, Egan added to his highlight reel. He took a handoff on a jet-sweep and ran up the sideline, when he appeared to run out of space at the 5-yard line, he cut inside with a juke that wowed the crowd and left defenders in the grass en route to the end zone.

3. 20-yard TD run in the first quarter

Egan didn’t wait long to put his fingerprints on the game. In fact, on South Shore Tech’s first offensive play, he broke free up the middle for a 20-yard TD run.

The defense opened the game by forcing a Bourne three-and-out behind quarterback sacks from sophomore Brady Hofeman and junior Eric Anzavino. The Canalmen were forced to punt out of their end zone, which ended up going just 15 yards to give the Vikings prime field position.

4. 61-yard TD run that didn’t count

One of Egan’s most impressive plays of the day was taken away due to a pair of Viking penalties. Egan broke three tackles before bursting his way for 61-yard TD run. The penalties wiped the score away, but that didn’t matter because …

5. 10-yard TD run in the second quarter

After seeing his 61-yard TD wiped off the board, the Vikings found a way to dig out of a second-and-13. Senior quarterback Jared Madden helped move the chains with three runs totaling 38 yards on the drive, but it was Egan finishing the drive with a 10-yard TD run. That put the Vikings up 28-7.

“Jared is a nice dual threat and Todd is just an athlete,” said Doyle. “They’re definitely two athletes that like to get in space. (Coach) Allan Burns, who does our offense, does a great job of getting them in space.”

“I feel like once we get past the line then me and Jared can both make a linebacker miss,” said Egan. “Honestly, me and him are pretty tough kids so we can definitely make a safety miss by running through them or bouncing it to the outside.”

6. 24-yard TD run in second quarter

Egan ended the half with a 24-yard TD run to cap a four-play, 59-yard drive.

Senior Max Main kickstarted the drive with a 23-yard run.

Egan’s TD put the Vikings up 34-7, but he wasn’t done scoring in the first half just yet.

7. 2-point conversion pass to Madden

Following the 24-yard TD run, the Vikings went to a trick play to add to their lead. Egan got the ball on a WR reverse and threw a pass into the flat to a wide open Madden, who began the play as the QB.

8. 28-yard run on a jet sweep in the third quarter

The Canalmen didn’t go away without a fight. South Shore Tech gave up possession on the second play of the third quarter. Two plays later, Bourne’s Kelly DeSimone scored on a 1-yard run to cut the deficit to 36-14.

The Vikings had an immediate answer. Junior Lucas Salvucci returned the ensuing kickoff 41 yards to the Bourne 35. Egan needed one play to make it first-and-goal with a 28-yard run up the sideline. He was ruled to have stepped out at the 8 before diving into the end zone.

That whistle only delayed his entrance into the end zone.

9. 7-yard TD run in the third quarter

Following the 27-yard run, Egan scored his fifth TD of the day with a run up the gut.

10. 15-yard reception in the second quarter

South Shore Tech only completed one pass on the day (it was the only pass it attempted besides the 2-point trick play). Egan hauled in a a bubble screen from Madden and made a couple of defenders miss as he picked up 15. Two plays later, Egan scored on a 24-yard run.

“He’s just an athlete,” said Doyle of Egan. “We have him on kick return. We give him the ball out of the backfield or at receiver. We just try to get him the ball in space and tonight it just felt like he was in a world of his own out there.”

The Vikings start Mayflower League play at home against Upper Cape Tech next Friday at 6:30 p.m. Thursday’s win was a nice recovery after opening with a 28-6 loss to Nashoba Tech.

“It was great to have a bounce-back week, for sure,” said Egan. “It definitely wasn’t our best game (last week) but we came back. 48-27 isn’t too bad.”
