Highs in the mid-90s forecast for Appleton, Green Bay on Labor Day weekend

After an autumn-like day on Wednesday, summer vacation is forecast to go out in a blaze of heat.

High temperatures over Labor Day weekend are forecast to reach the mid-90s again in Appleton and Green Bay — but this time around, the air will be drier, said meteorologist Tasos Kallas with the National Weather Service in Green Bay. However, unlike earlier in summer, many public outdoor pools and water parks have closed for the season.

The days will start heating up Saturday, but the region will see its highest temperatures Sunday, Monday and potentially Tuesday, according to the weather service.

How hot will it get?

The temperatures will either meet or exceed the record high for Sept. 2-4 in Appleton and Green Bay, Kallas said.

The forecast for Green Bay (as of Thursday morning) calls for:

  • 87 on Saturday

  • 94 on Sunday

  • 94 on Labor Day

  • 91 on Tuesday, which will be the first day for most area schools

The forecast for Appleton calls for:

  • 87 on Saturday

  • 96 on Sunday

  • 95 on Monday

  • 91 on Tuesday

Like the heat earlier this month, the culprit is the "same heat dome that's been plaguing the central and southern United States all summer," Kallas said.

However, the hottest ever September day on record in Green Bay goes back to Sept. 10, 1931, which recorded a high temperature of 97.

Hot weather is coming to Appleton and Green Bay. Here's how to protect yourself

Heat-related illnesses can suddenly arise and quickly turn into an emergency situation, according to the National Weather Service.

However, they are preventable. You can protect yourself from the heat by drinking plenty of fluids, staying out of the sun during the hottest part of the day, and cooling off in an air-conditioned room.

Public spaces with air conditioning, like malls and local public libraries, can offer relief from heat. However, many public buildings used as cooling shelters, like public libraries, are closed Labor Day.

According to the city of Green Bay, the local Salvation Army at 626 Union Court (8 to 3 p.m.) and the NEW Community Shelter at 301 Mather St. (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) are offering their locations as cooling sites for those needing a break from a the heat.

In Appleton, the city recommends the Fox River Mall at 4301 W. Wisconsin Ave. as a cooling shelter. It's open Labor Day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
