Highway 2 to close from Grand Rapids to Swan River
Jun. 4—A 19-mile repaving project will disrupt traffic along U.S. Highway 2 east of Grand Rapids over the next several months.
Construction will begin Monday on the section from the Prairie River, just east of Grand Rapids city limits, to a point about 2 miles east of Swan River — an estimated $13.8 million project.
Traffic will initially be rerouted along state Highway 65, state Highway 200 and Itasca County Road 3 into Grand Rapids. Trucks will be directed to use U.S. Highway 169.
That will continue until Aug. 4, when work in the Swan River area will require the posting of a slightly modified detour. Construction is expected to continue through October.
Local traffic will still be able to access businesses and residences along the affected areas of Highway 2, the Minnesota Department of Transportation reported.
The repaving project does not include the stretch of highway through Warba, nor does it include the Swan River juncture of highways 2 and 65, where a roundabout is slated to be installed in 2023.
