Highway 33 and other roads in Stanislaus County are closed due to local flooding

UPDATE: The California Highway Patrol said Thursday afternoon that both lanes of Highway 33 between Patterson and Crows Landing are open again. Here is the original story.

Highway 33 was closed Thursday morning south of Patterson due to flooding, one of numerous road closures in effect throughout Stanislaus County due to localized flooding.

The California Highway Patrol incident page reported roadway flooding on Highway 33 at 3:22 a.m. The highway in western Stanislaus County was closed from Marshall Road to Pomelo Avenue.

CHP spokesman Officer Tom Olsen said the closure is causing a short delay for motorists as they take local roads around the barricades.

He said the highway shoulders are covered with 18 inches of water, which appears to be coming from isolated runoff of the storms Tuesday and Wednesday.

Olsen said the closure is temporary. “If we have fair weather, this will be opened up within 24 hours,” Olsen said.

The Stanislaus County Office of Emergency Services says a dozen road closures are in effect throughout the county due to flooding issues.

The CHP reminded motorists it’s unsafe to drive through standing water on roads closed by authorities.
