Highway 82 tunnel maintenance to be completed Friday near Cloudcroft. Delays expected

Drivers could face minor delays on U.S. Highway 82 due to annual clean-up work inside a road tunnel near Cloudcroft.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation announced it will begin its annual maintenance inside the tunnel beginning Tuesday, Aug. 16 with work expected to be completed by Friday, Aug. 19.

Drivers should expect single-lane closures with a pilot car leading drivers through the tunnel.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation urged drivers to watch for workers and to obey the posted reduced speed limits.

Delays are expected between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

The maintenance work involved cleaning the retroreflective wall tabs and restriping the road inside the tunnel.

In March, a survey for a lighting project in the tunnel was completed.

The tunnel does not currently have any lighting, and drivers are urged to turn on their headlights upon entering the tunnel.

The lighting project is expected to begin in spring or summer 2023.

The U.S. Highway 82 tunnel is 528.9 feet long and was built in 1949 and is the only currently used road tunnel in New Mexico.
