The Iowa Department of Transportation will bring extra help to Iowa’s highways this winter. The Iowa DOT’s Highway Helper program is a free service that assists stranded motorists with flat tires, dead batteries or empty fuel tanks on metro highways. This winter, Highway Helpers will hit the road at 5 a.m. and will stay on the road until 9 p.m. on weekdays. Highway Helpers will also expand their role as traffic mangers following a crash. Their trucks feature larger signs to warn drivers to avoid an accident scene. Rather than changing tires on snowy Iowa highways, Highway Helpers will transport stranded drivers to a safe location where they can call for help Join KCCI’s Todd Magel for a ride with the highway helper.
