Highway Patrol: Motorcycle wreck claims life of South Carolina man, Shelby woman charged

A Blacksburg, South Carolina, man died in a motorcycle wreck Thursday morning on Long Branch Road after colliding with a car, according to North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Trooper Shane Brown said Aliesha Hood, who lives in Shelby, was at the stop sign at the intersection of Long Branch Road and Bethlehem Church Road shortly before 10:30 a.m. when she went to make a left turn.

Brown said Hood didn’t see Buddy Swartzwelder, 39, on his Honda motorcycle heading north on Long Branch Road.

“Ms. Hood failed to yield the right of way to the motorcycle. She didn’t see the motorcycle coming as she made a left turn,” Brown said. “Mr. Swartzwelder attempted to stop, but he had to lay the bike down. The motorcycle hit the left driver door and back left door at the bottom of the vehicle. He was ejected and pronounced dead on scene.”

He said Hood was charged with failure to yield right of way and misdemeanor death by vehicle.
