A man was found dead Saturday afternoon in a waterhole near Badger Springs hiking trail in Black Canyon City, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.

According to the sheriff's office, three women who were hiking in the area found the body and contacted an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper.

The trooper went to the waterhole, located about a mile east of mile marker 254 on Interstate 17, and confirmed the man was dead, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.

Yavapai County Sheriff's Office deputies also arrived at the location and found the body completely naked and covered in water and mud. Deputies found some of his personal items and "possible other physical evidence" nearby, the sheriff's office said.

The man remained unidentified, authorities said. Criminal detectives were at the scene investigating.
