Hiland's Shoup, West Holmes' Barr, Schaad qualify for Div. II district boys tennis tourney

Hiland's Garret Shoup and West Holmes' James Barr and Brody Schaad qualified for the Division II district boys tennis tournament after their performances in the sectional tournament at Dover City Park on Monday.

The top four finishers in both singles and doubles qualify for the district tournament at Ohio University on May 21.

Tuesday’s matches were for placement.

Shoup, the No. 2 seed, made it to the semifinals after a 6-0, 6-0 win over Coshocton's Laura Tejon Morgan, a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Steubenville's Brandon Krolovic and a 6-1 6-1 win over Steubenville Catholic Central's Matino Alexander.

No.1 seed Hunter Ellis from West Holmes was upset in the quarterfinals by St. Clairsville's Shane Jackson 6-1, 6-4. Ellis, who earned a first-round bye, defeated Cambridge's Andrew Daymut 6-0, 6-0 before falling in the third round.

Buckeye Local's Lukas Wain, the No. 3 seed, and Steubenville Catholic Central's Thomas Kanzelberger, the No. 4 seed, also made it to the semifinals.

In doubles action, Barr and Schaad made it the semifinals as the No. 4 seed.

They had a first-round bye and defeated East Liverpool's Ayden Wright and Preston Dawson 6-3, 6-2 in the second round and topped Hiland's Zach Mullet and Caelan Howell 6-1, 6-1 in the third round.

Also advancing to district play were No. 1 seed Cole Dailey and Preston Dawson from East Liverpool, No. 2 seed Caleb Stanberry and Blade Bachmann from Cambridge, and No. 3 seed Brady Hannon and Justin Cole, also from Cambridge.

The East and Southeast Districts are combined with two qualifiers in singles and doubles advancing to the state tournament.
