Hillsboro Hops get $8 million from Washington County for new stadium

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — After having their future hang in the balance for months, the Hillsboro Hops got a big win on Tuesday as they look to secure funding for a new ballpark.

The Washington County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved $8 million for a new city-owned ballpark, which will allow the Hops to meet Major League Baseball faculty requirements for minor league teams.

Currently, there is no visiting clubhouse in Ron Tonkin Field, the Hops’ current home. Away teams have to change across the parking lot at Hillsboro Stadium. Add in the fact that the team would also need to add women’s locker rooms, an additional batting cage, and a weight room in the facility to meet MLB standards, and a new ballpark became the only option for the Hops.

“As a community and a county we have enjoyed the Hops and everything they bring to this region,” said Washington County Commissioner Jerry Willey.

“Today’s unanimous support from Washington County is a critical piece toward ensuring the Hops remain in Hillsboro for decades to come,” added Hillsboro Hops President and General Manager K.L. Wombacher. “A new ballpark will pay deep dividends for this region—not only financially through event and lodging revenue, but more importantly as a year-round community hub for baseball games, youth sports, festivals, concerts and more.”

The Hops still need $15 million from the Oregon legislature for the new stadium to become a reality. The state’s February legislative session is scheduled to end right before MLB’s funding deadline on March 15.
