Hillsborough opens cold weather shelters Monday night, Pinellas will Tuesday night

Hillsborough County will open cold weather shelters on Monday night ahead of plummeting temperatures, while Pinellas County is planning to open its shelters on Tuesday night.

The National Weather Service is calling for temperatures in Tampa to dip into the 40s Monday night into Tuesday morning, with the wind chill making it feel even colder. Spectrum Bay News 9 predicts Tuesday night will be a tad colder.

The county’s shelter program is for the homeless and for people with inadequate heat in their homes.

The shelters will accept guests between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Monday unless they reach capacity before then. Shelter organizers are expecting high demand with limited capacity, according to a news release from Hillsborough County.

All congregate shelters are reserved for adults only. Pre-registration is required by calling 813-209-1176. Phone lines turn on at 9 a.m., and the deadline to call is 5 p.m.

Families with minor children should call the same number. Metropolitan Ministries is supplying a limited number of single-night motel vouchers on a first-come, first-served basis for families with minor children.
