Hillsborough Schools Update Quarantine Rules To Align With NJ

·3 min read

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Hillsborough Schools is cutting its recommended time for COVID isolation and quarantine to align with the latest guidance from the New Jersey Department Of Health.

The new guidance will take effect on Tuesday, Jan. 18.

"Students who test positive for COVID-19 will need to isolate and stay home for at least 5 full days after the onset of symptoms or if asymptomatic after the positive test," said Acting Superintendent Dr. Kim T. Feltre.

Guidance includes:

  • Students can return after day 5, once their symptoms have significantly improved and they must generally be feeling better. Students who don’t feel better on day 6 should continue to stay home until they feel better. If you plan to return your student between days 6-10, the school nurse MUST be notified 24 hours in advance.

  • Additionally, the student must wear a mask at all times (both indoors and outdoors) for an additional 5 days (days 6-10). This includes during gym, recess, and adequate distancing will be arranged while eating lunch.

  • On days 6-10, students should limit participation in extracurricular activities, including sports, to only those activities where masks can be worn consistently and correctly.

  • Students who cannot mask appropriately must complete a full 10 day isolation.

  • Physician clearance is required for return to competitive athletics.

  • Physician clearance is not required to return to gym unless the student was hospitalized for COVID-19.

  • Students who are symptomatic and choose not to test will be presumed positive and will have to follow the guidelines above.

Unvaccinated close contacts of COVID-19 positive individuals will be subject to quarantine for 5 days after the last exposure to that individual.

  • In order to return after 5 days, the student must wear a mask when around others (both indoors and outdoors) for an additional 5 days (days 6-10). This includes during gym, recess and sports.

  • Students do not need to take a test to return to school if they have remained asymptomatic, however, testing is recommended after day 5.

  • Students should continue to monitor for symptoms for 10 days.

  • If a student becomes symptomatic or becomes positive while quarantining on day 5 or later, they should notify their school nurse and must isolate for the full 10 days.

Vaccinated students or students who tested positive for COVID-19 within 90 days who are in close contact with a COVID-19 positive case are exempt from quarantine.

  • Individuals who are close contacts should continue to monitor for symptoms for 10 days.

  • Testing is recommended after day 5 for individuals who have not tested positive within the 90 days.

The NJDOH updated its guidance on Wednesday, Jan. 12. Recommended isolation time was slashed from 10 days for people with COVID-19 to 5 days, if asymptomatic, followed by 5 days of wearing a mask when around others for New Jersey schools. This reflects the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC)'s guidance announced on Dec. 27. Read More: COVID Isolation Rules Changed For NJ Schools
