Hillsborough woman fatally struck husband in drunken crash, police allege

Three men have been charged in connection with a shooting that took place Friday on Easton Avenue, said Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Vincent Sabo of the New Brunswick Police Department.

HILLSBOROUGH – A township woman has been charged with second-degree death by auto for allegedly striking her husband with at vehicle a their home off Zion Road while she was drunk.

Amanda O'Keefe, 37, was charged March 29 in connection with the death of her 41-year-old husband, Robert, at their home on Feb. 25, Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald said.

Second-degree crimes carry prison sentences of five to 10 years.

Police and EMS went to the home on Clark Lane on Sourland Mountain in a remote section of the township at about 2:28 a.m. Feb. 25 in response to a 911 call.

Detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, Crime Scene Investigation Unit and members of the Somerset County Collision Analysis Reconstruction Team responded to the scene along with detectives from the Hillsborough Township Police Department. Investigators from the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office also went to the scene.

McDonald said the investigation found that Amanda O’Keefe was over the legal blood alcohol concentration limit at the time of incident.

Following a detention hearing in Superior Court on Thursday, she was released pending future court appearances.

According to his obituary, Robert O'Keefe was raised in Bridgewater and graduated from Bridgewater-Raritan High School in 2000. He was active in sports and especially excelled at football, lacrosse and ice hockey.

The obituary said he and his wife have two sons.
