CLARE, Mich. — The Hornets varsity boys track team qualified for the MITCA D3 Team State Finals earlier this season. Head coach Clay Schiman and the Hornets traveled to Clare high school to take on more than a dozen schools in the MITCA state finals. Coach Schiman and the Hornets boys varsity track team were the only county team to qualify for the MITCA D3 state finals. They battled schools including Constantine, Benzie Central and Hart for a top five team finish.

The Hornets ran their way to fourth place in the final team standings, beating out Constantine by five points. The rest of the top five included Erie Mason in third; Traverse City St. Francis in second and Clare taking home the state title. In order to seal the top five finish, the Hornets had several athletes finish in the top three of their events.

Senior Aidan Flannery finished the day with a 6' 5" high jump, a new PR for Flannery that earned him the finals win. Flannery will look to follow that up at the MHSAA D3 State Finals. The 4x400-meter relay team of Aidan Flannery, Boston Hite, Jonah Richards and Jonathan Torres took third place.

The 4x100-meter team led by Sam Willes, Hunter Wilson, Jordan Barnes and Jonathan Torres won the team state finals race. The 44.5 time was .25 seconds faster then Benzie Central who took second place. Senior Sam Willes started the race and senior Jon Torres finished the race.

Sophomore Brice VanZant took second place in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles. VanZant set a new PR time of 42.35 in the 300-meter hurdles.

Sophomore Hunter Wilson took third in the 200-meter dash and second place in the 100-meter dash. Many of the athletes listed above and below will compete in the MHSAA team state finals for D3 this Saturday, June 4. The finals are held at Kent City, and a list of athletes from the Hornets boys (and girls) teams who qualified for state can be found in the Daily News' recap of regionals at hillsdale.net.
