HILLSDALE — It has been a busy start to January for the Hillsdale Hornet wrestling program, led by varsity head coach Nate Spieth.

After hosting the Hornets for Hospice tournament on Saturday, the team was back on their home mat on Wednesday to host several LCAA opponents for a quad meet. The Hornets would take on Dundee and Ida, as all three teams look to gain more experience against their conference opponents.

Hillsdale would first take on Dundee. Dundee, a traditional powerhouse wrestling program, would defeat Hillsdale by a final team score of 63-15. Winning matches for Hillsdale would be 189 wrestler John Petersen who defeated Ethan Collins in a 5-2 decision.

Senior Quade Mesarosh would face off against Jackson Salaenbien from Dundee in a match in the 215-pound weight class. Quade would pin the match via pin after five minutes had elapsed.

In the battle between the two 285-pound weight class wrestlers, Hillsdale Senior Logan Horn would win via pin against Justin Busz of Dundee. The fall would happen around the 1:04 mark of the first round.

The Hornets would then take on Ida in another LCAA dual. Hillsdale’s Emmett Woodcox was in a tough match with Ida’s Izaiah Machuca, but would get the win via a DQ. At the 160-pound weight class, Jace Ringman would get the win over Ida’s Grady Mellen via pin at around 48 seconds.

Hillsdale’s Stephen Petersen, John Petersen, and Quade Mesarosh would get wins via voids. At the 285-pound weight class, Senior Logan Horn would take on Ida’s Chris Galloway. Logan Horn would get early points for a takedown, and at the end of the first round, Horn would start from the bottom, and quickly got an escape. Horn used his escape to take down Galloway, and that led to a quick pinfall around 2:20 into the match.

The Hornets would end up losing to Ida by a final team score of 39-36.

For coach Spieth and the team, regardless of the result, their battles with their LCAA opponents are important experience for the team as they go up against some of the state’s top wrestlers. Coach Spieth commended his team’s work ethic and their refusal to quit when things got tough against their opponents today. Coach Spieth believes their hard-nosed work will pay off in spades as the season progresses.

The team will be back in action this weekend on Saturday as they travel to the Carson City-Crystal Wrestling Invitational. The event will begin around 9:00 a.m. and will be held at City-Crystal High School.

Admission to get in for spectators is five dollars. Hillsdale will be battling Laingsburg and Belding in the Gold Pool. Other teams in attendance include Comstock Park and Leslie.
