Hilmar man, 30, suffers major injuries after motorcycle crash in Merced County, CHP says

A 30-year Hilmar man suffered major injuries Saturday afternoon after his motorcycle crashed into another vehicle on Highway 165, just south of Fowler Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded to calls of a vehicle vs. motorcycle collision near Hilmar at 2:37 p.m.

A 76-year old Hilmar woman was driving a 1999 Honda Accord north on Highway 165. She was slowing to make a left turn when her car collided with a 2002 Kawasaki ZX600 driven by Melo Toste Correia.

Witnesses told officers that Toste Correia was driving about 80 mph and passing vehicles.

Toste Correia continued another 80 feet on the motorcycle after the collision until the bike hit a cable box and Toste Correia was thrown from the motorcycle and tumbled another 200 feet, according to CHP Officer Eric Zuniga.

Toste Correia suffered lacerations to his head and possible internal bleeding, according to Zuniga. He was taken to a Modesto-area hospital.

The Hilmar woman was also taken to an area hospital out of precaution.

Neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be a factor in the collision.
