FOND DU LAC - Nationally-recognized rock group Hinder will play a free concert Aug. 12. Part of the Horicon Bank Ripon Summer Concert Series, the concert takes place 7 to 11 p.m. at the Village Green. Lines of Loyalty is the opening band.

Hinder is a multi-platinum band that has sold more than 3.8 million albums and more than 7.5 million singles. The band was formed in 2001 in Oklahoma City by lead singer Austin Winkler, guitarist Joe “Blower” Garvey and drummer Cody Hanson. Bassist Mike Roden and guitarist Mark King joined in 2003. Winkler left in 2013 with Marshal Dutton taking over in 2015 as lead vocalist.

Their biggest hit is "Lips of an Angel," released in 2006. Hinder is touring to promote their sixth album, "The Reign."

Chicken Wire Empire will perform a free concert the night before, at 7 p.m. Aug. 11. The group began in Wisconsin as a bluegrass band, releasing a self-titled debut album in 2014. CWE changed its style into high-energy jamgrass. The story was documented in the film ”All It Takes,” released in 2016. During the COVID pandemic, the band recorded “Fresh Pickles,” which was released in February 2022.

Career Fair Cookout at Badger Liquor Aug. 8

Badger Liquor, 850 Morris St., Fond du Lac, will hold its first Career Fair Cookout from 3 to 6 p.m. Aug. 8.

The company said in a news release it recently expanded its warehouse facilities and is inviting the public to take a peek inside.

The cookout will be open to the public – but especially to job seekers who may be interested in working for the company, which has been in Fond du Lac nearly 90 years.

Free food and a chance to enter to win a free Blackstone 17-inch grill will also be included, along with other prizes.

New Langdon exhibit features art created from recycled materials

The newest exhibit in the Langdon Divers Community Gallery at the Fond du Lac Public Library will be “Remnants: Works by Stephanie Leisering.” It will be on display Aug. 2 through Sept. 5, during regular library hours.

Leisering’s work incorporates recycled and discarded materials. She has used materials, fabric and other supplies from thrift stores as well as those passed along to her. She does improvisational quilting and her pieces show how reusing discarded objects can prolong its usefulness.

Also at the Fond du Lac library, learn about the Great Peshtigo Fire during a History at Home program set for 6 p.m. Aug. 10. The fire in Peshtigo happened Oct. 8, 1871 — the same night as the Great Chicago Fire — and killed more than 1,200 people.

More than 1.2 million acres of forest were burned, causing damage to several communities and 800 people perished in Peshtigo alone.

It will be presented by Karen Vincent Humiston, who has spent years researching the Great Peshtigo Fire. She is working on a book about the event. For more information, visit fdlpl.org.

Shopping, education part of Women on Watson event

Women on Watson, set for Aug. 5, includes shopping, dining, and education at participating businesses in downtown Ripon.

A continental breakfast will be served at 9:30 a.m. Attendees will receive a swag bag and a map of the businesses that are taking part in the event. The bag includes special promotions and free items.

SSM Health cardiologist to discuss new testing technology

Dr. Marc Atzenhoefer, an SSM Health Fond du Lac Regional Clinic cardiologist and SSM Health regional director of Cardiac Imaging, will share the latest advancements in cardiac care.

The free presentation will begin at noon Aug. 10 at the Fond du Lac Family YMCA, 90 W. Second St.

Dr. Atzenhoefer will give an overview of cardiac technology advancements and testing that is usually only available in large urban areas. This testing helps identify cardiac disease and treatment options earlier.

Waupun detours in place Aug. 11 and 12 for truck show, parade

Waupun Police Department has released a notice that there will be detours Aug. 11 and 12 for the Waupun Truck-n-Show parades.

Detours will be in place 8:45 to 11 p.m. Aug. 11 and 2:45 to 4:45 p.m. Aug. 12.

State 49 south will be closed from Gateway Drive to Fox Lake Road.

State 26 will be closed from East Spring Street to East Jefferson Street, although local traffic may still access the road.

Aug. 11 features the "Lights of the Night" convoy. Activities Aug. 12 include parades, demos, vendors, entertainment and more. A portion of proceeds will benefit the Waupun Area Animal Shelter, REACH Relief and Make-A-Wish Foundation. For more information, visit waupuntrucknshow.com.

SSM Health seeks donors for Aug. 15 blood drive

A blood drive will be held noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 15 at SSM Health Waupun Memorial Hospital, 620 W. Brown St.

The public is welcome to participate in the ImpactLife drive. Donors will have a choice of a gift card or a donation to support local teachers.

AI workshop offered by Envision Greater Fond du Lac

Envision Greater Fond du Lac’s Ignite Small Business and Startup Support will host “AI Made Easy: An Introduction for Small Business Entrepreneurs” noon to 1 p.m. Aug. 15 at Envision Greater Fond du Lac, entrance at 9 Sheboygan St.

Learn the basics of AI and explore its practical applications for business. No prior AI knowledge required. The workshop will be led by Kurt Wismer, who teaches business, marketing, entrepreneurship, and IT for the North Fond du Lac School District. He also is a Google for Education Certified Innovator and Trainer, a Microsoft Certified Innovative Educator, and an INCubatorEdu Master Teacher and trainer.

School supplies are the prizes for Celebration Assembly carnival

Celebration Assembly will hold its annual “Back 2 School Carnival” 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 19 at 825 Fond du Lac Ave.

There will be a bounce house and free carnival-style games to win school supplies — while they last. Families also can enjoy a free hot dog lunch.

Marian University's George Koonce named to Horicon Bank Board

Dr. George Koonce, senior vice president of university relations at Marian University and former Green Bay Packers linebacker, was appointed recently to the Horicon Bank Board of Directors.

Hope Lutheran donates Walleye Weekend proceeds to nonprofits

Hope Lutheran Church of Fond du Lac raised $9,400 selling concessions during Walleye Weekend. The money will be shared equally between The Salvation Army of Fond du Lac, St. Katharine Drexel Homeless Shelter, Charis Pregnancy Help Center and Hope’s Pantry of Hope food pantry.

Salvation Army has served Fond du Lac County for 133 years. St. Katherine Drexel Homeless Shelter helps improve the lives of our neighbors. Charis Pregnancy Help Center offers free and confidential pregnancy services, including free ultrasounds for women in their first trimester. Pantry of Hope, a charitable mission of Hope Lutheran Church, offers perishable and non-perishable food items and hygiene products to those in need.
