Hinds County Sheriff's Office introduces new command staff, announces new body cameras

Hinds County Sheriff's Department held a press conference on Tuesday, Aug. 16 to introduce new public safety officials and to announce the approval of body cams.

Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones introduced Latasha Holmes as the new Captain for day-to-day operations of the Hinds County Sheriff's Office, Jarrat Taylor, the new undersheriff, and Capt. Steven Sims, who is the newly appointed captain of the Criminal Investigations Division.

"This is the newly promoted command staff, and I look forward to their continued leadership," Jones said after introducing them in Tuesday's press conference. "I believe that the new officials are the right people chosen for the right time during my administration at the Hinds County Sheriff's Office."

Crime in the city of Jackson has been prominent during the past few years. To help bring a safer approach to crime in the City of Jackson, Jones said having body cameras will help with transparency and vulnerable moments for the Hinds County Sheriff's Office.

"The Hinds County Sheriff's Office was awarded $1 million through the Hinds County Board of Supervisors," Jones said of funding for the body cameras and other equipment. "We are thankful for the money we received from the board to upgrade our equipment and technology.

"As a result of the money awarded, we have purchased 11 patrol vehicles and unmarked vehicles, a website and body cams for hostage negotiations for the Hinds County Sheriff's Office," Jones said. "We have purchased 75 body cams, and I believe this is a very important tool to have while on duty. We have a body cam program that will give officers proper training when they encounter crime or other unexpected issues out in the field."

"The body cam will be accessible to enlighten situations and provide information that is needed for any ongoing investigation," Jones said. "Over 50 body cams have already been deployed to officers along with a new policy as well that is strictly enforced."
