Hiring Blitz at KCC draws hundreds of students and community members

There is usually some kind of national shortage. Currently, it’s not enough employees.

To mitigate that shortage, a hiring blitz was held Wednesday, drawing 50 employers to Kellogg Community College Grahl Center. It was hosted by Michigan Works, Branch Area Careers Center and Kellogg Community College.

It was a one-stop job search for several hundred BACC students and community members. Representatives of many companies were encouraged by the response.

Sommer Woodman, with Tenneco of Marshall, said she had quite a few interested people. Of course, she would happily hire 50, such is the need.

Representatives of ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital said they have openings in every department. Fortunately, BACC has an active health sciences program.

Amber Berry, owner of The Aqua Pit in Coldwater, with her daughter, Cassidy, were looking for life guards and aqua guides. They also want to remind the community their newest and biggest aqua attraction in the area.

Other businesses promoting their services included Children’s Museum of Branch County.

Southern Michigan Bank & Trust, a faithful BACC supporter, also was present, seeking student summer staff, said Charlotte Lewis, retail training coordinator. The local bank is community-minded, said Felicia Landis, branch manger. It offers banking options for every generation — totally electronic to totally face-to-face, whatever the customer needs.

BACC students were looking for more than the freebies available at such events. Most carried assignment sheets requiring they make intentional contact with a specific number of potential employers.

Woodman said she sets up this booth in various schools during lunch hour. The quality of questions from BACC students, their self confidence and “soft skills” such as eye contact, was impressive compared to most.

Shawn DeYoung, of Michigan Works, was pleased with the turnout. He worked with Susan Sobeske, BACC career development consultant and KCC staff to coordinate the event.

Susan Sobeske, of BACC, and Shawn DeLong, of Michigan Works, together with KCC, created a one-stop job search opportunity Wednesday, drawing 50 employers and hundreds of students and community members.
