Historic hoops: 5 things to know about Jacksonville ties to NCAA women's basketball upsets

For the first time in 25 years, two No. 1 seeds are out of the NCAA Tournament for women's basketball before the Sweet 16.

And both upsets included a significant tie to the First Coast.

The stunning 54-49 upset of eighth-seeded Ole Miss over top seed Stanford, followed Monday by ninth-seeded Miami's 85-69 win against No. 1 seed Indiana, has dealt a double jolt to the women's hoops field.

Miami sophomore Jasmyne Roberts, a Bishop Kenny graduate, scored 16 points to help the Canes stun Indiana. And Ole Miss, led by former Jacksonville University coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin, made history with its surprise against Stanford.

Here are five things to know about them.

Two-time All-First Coast winner

Roberts won the Times-Union's All-First Coast player of the year award twice, in 2019-20 and 2020-21, joining the likes of Rennia Davis (Ribault), Camille Hobby (Nease) and Steffi Sorensen (Bartram Trail) as two-time award winners. She also won the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 4A player of the year award in 2020-21, and finished as runner-up in Miss Basketball voting to O'Mariah Gordon of Braden River.
