The Derzhprom (State Industry House), a monument of national importance, was damaged in a Russian missile attack on Kharkiv on Jan. 2, Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne Kharkiv reported.

Windows and stained glass windows were smashed in the building, although the building's staff was not injured, the director of Derzhprom said. After the attack, workers began to board up the windows in order to seal the building by the evening of Jan. 2.

Architect Viktor Dvornikov noted that almost the entire northwestern part of the building had been damaged.

"The windows are deformed and broken," Dvornikov said.

“The scope of the work is very large-scale. Today's damage affects the condition of the building, because temperature fluctuations can lead to damage to the interior decoration, which is a serious problem. There are a large number of wooden structures inside Derzhprom, (and temperature fluctuations) will be very harmful.”

UNESCO added Kharkiv's Derzhprom and 19 other buildings to the International List of Cultural Property under Enhanced Protection on Sept. 7, 2022.

The State Industry House was built in the constructivist style. It was the first 13-story Soviet building to be constructed from 1925 to 1928. The building is located on Svobody Square, the central square of Kharkiv.

Dozens of buildings in the city center suffered extensive damage in the attack, including the popular 5-star Palace Hotel.

While Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov initially mentioned the strike had been carried out by Russian Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles, police later clarified that Iskander missiles were used.

Russia launched a second attack in the evening, destroying a school and targeting a residential area with S-300 missiles.
