Historic Trinity Lutheran Church in York, and its contents, to be sold at auction

A time capsule of 19th century wood and stained glass craftsmanship, the former Trinity Lutheran Church at 415 N. West St., will be sold at an absolute auction to the highest bidder on Saturday, Oct. 1, beginning at 9 a.m.

According to a 2013 story in the York Daily Record, the so-called “little green church” in York’s west end started life as an Episcopal Church and was originally named “Chapel of the Holy Incarnation.” In 1912, the Missionary Committee of the York Conference of the Lutheran Church first made use of the building and plans soon followed to form a permanent congregation.

The timeless, wood-shingled icon of the Avenues Neighborhood in York has changed little over the past century, home to the same Lutheran congregation. The vaulted ceiling of the sanctuary is finished entirely in wood, with stained glass windows showering light from the lofty heights.

On the other side of the complex, a more open Sunday school auditorium was turned into individual classrooms at some point. The basement hosts a social hall and a commercial kitchen.

On March 12, the congregation gave the news on its Facebook page: “With great sadness, we share that Trinity has made the difficult decision to close. The last service will be held on Sunday, June 12 at 11 a.m.  We know so many people in our community have connections with the Little Green Church and fond memories.”
