Historical Milestone: Liberty University opens disaster Emergency Operations Center

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — On April 8, Liberty University celebrated a new milestone in its school’s history with the grand opening of the new Emergency Operations Center.

The new facility is the official site for the Commonwealth of Virginia’s 3 Coordination Center. This includes Charlottesville, Farmville, Harrisonburg, Lynchburg, South Boston, Staunton, and Waynesboro.

The school says this will strengthen its partnership with federal state and local agencies. It will also help them coordinate with disaster response and recovery missions. After many years of planning and designing the center the mission was finally complete.

“The opening of this Emergency Operations Center is a significant moment in Liberty University’s history, as it strengthens our partnership and shared commitments with federal, state, and local agencies for the coordination, resourcing, and communication of disaster recovery efforts throughout the region,” said Liberty VP of Security and Public Safety Marcus Tinsley. “Liberty will become a hub for emergency management services in the heart of Virginia.”

Along with this new milestone, Liberty was also presented with the National Weather Service’s achievement of being “Storm Ready” award.

“This facility is what came out of that multi-year research that was designed to ensure that our liberty community and local community is as safe as possible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year,” Tinsley told WFXR at the ribbon cutting.

Liberty University is the fourth university in Virginia to be recognized as “storm-ready,” This means the institution has several ways to get and send weather warnings and more.
