History on This Day: Allen Iverson drops 52 points on the Raptors

On this day in 2001, Allen Iverson scored 52 points to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a victory over the Toronto Raptors in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Iverson finished with seven assists, four steals and two rebounds in the 121-88 win as the 76ers took a 3-2 series lead. He converted on 21-of-32 shot attempts from the field, including a Sixers playoff record 8-of-14 from 3-point range. He joined Michael Jordan as the only two players to score 50 or more points in two games of the same playoff series. Jamal Murray and Donovan Mitchell have since joined that list.

He also had 54 points against the Raptors in a Game 2 victory.

Behind the play of Iverson, the 76ers eventually defeated the Raptors in seven games to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals. They defeated the Milwaukee Bucks from there to face the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals.

Iverson claimed his only Most Valuable Player trophy that year after an incredible run with the Sixers. Despite losing in the NBA Finals to the Lakers, the 2000-01 season was one of Iverson’s best after leading the league in scoring.
