This truly historic photograph was taken at a reunion of Hayes' 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Brigade at Spiegel Grove in 1877 before any additions were made to the original house built by Sardis Birchard in 1859.

While still President, Rutherford B. Hayes came back to Fremont for this special occasion. It was about this time he started planting trees in honor of important people in his life, including several generals he served with during the Civil War. (Submitted by Larry Michaels and Krista Michaels)
