Hit-and-run crash leaves pedestrian dead on Military Trail; PBSO questioning driver

PALM SPRINGS — The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office is investigating a crash on Military Trail near Palm Springs that left a man dead Sunday night.

The agency identified the man Thursday as Ramon Alonso-Castellon, 54, of Hallandale Beach.

The driver whose car struck him is a 26-year-old man who lives in suburban West Palm Beach. The driver initially fled the scene and told investigators his car had been stolen before admitting that he had been at the wheel, according to a PBSO crash report made public Monday.

The wreck took place just before 8:30 p.m. on the 1600 block just north of Forest Hill Boulevard, A 2023 Dodge was northbound on Military just outside the village limits and struck the man, who was walking across the road from west to east.

Investigators said the vehicle was traveling "at a high rate of speed," and the impact of the crash threw the man onto the hood and windshield of the Dodge and then onto the pavement, the report said. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Investigators reported that the Dodge fled northbound and that they recovered it near Forest Lane, south of the intersection.
