Hit-and-run driver leaves Bradenton bicyclist in critical condition, troopers say

A search is underway to find the driver of a vehicle that hit a bicyclist and sent them into a ditch before fleeing the scene late Saturday night, the Florida Highway Patrol announced.

Around 11:40 p.m. Saturday, troopers say a driver traveling east on Mendoza Road, east of Ridgewood Boulevard, hit a cyclist. The rider, a 40-year-old Bradenton woman, ended up in a ditch on the side of the road, troopers say.

Officials say the bicyclist was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

According to a release, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene in an unknown direction. A crash report described the vehicle as a sedan but did not include a suspected make or model.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 866-634-8477 or FHP by dialing *347 from a cellphone.
