An elderly Columbia woman allegedly impaired by drugs is in custody after a Tuesday hit-and-run incident on Providence Road left a motorcyclist dead.

Susan D. Hanel, 72, failed to yield when making a left turn from northbound Providence Road onto East Sexton Road in a 2009 Hyundai Sonata, driving into the path of Skylar J. Maddox, 25, also of Columbia, the Columbia Police Department reported.

Maddox was traveling southbound on Providence Road near East Sexton Road on a 2005 Kawasaki Ninja 500R when he was unable to avoid Hanel's vehicle.

Maddox was transported by EMS to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The crash occurred at about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Maddox collided with the rear passenger side of Hanel's vehicle and was ejected from his motorcycle into the southbound lanes of Providence Road. He was wearing a helmet, the police said.

A third driver was traveling northbound on Providence Road just south of the crash in a 2015 Toyota Rav4. She avoided hitting Maddox, but hit his motorcycle, police said. She was wearing a seatbelt.

Hanel continued west on East Sexton Road after the crash. She and her vehicle were later located at her residence.

She was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired (drugs) resulting in death; leaving the scene of an accident; armed criminal action; operating a motor vehicle without a valid license; and careless and imprudent driving.

Hanel is being held at the Boone County Jail.

Further court information was not immediately available Wednesday.
