HK dockworker strike set to enter second week

HONG KONG (AP) -- A strike by Hong Kong dockworkers that is slowing cargo shipments at the world's third busiest port looks set to drag into a second week.

Several hundred dockworkers and supporters camped out on the road in front of a container terminal on Wednesday, the seventh day of their strike. The workers are demanding more than the 5 percent pay rise offered by subcontractors supplying labor to port operators.

Hutchison International Terminals operates the terminal where the workers are striking. Officials have said the action is costing the company 5 million Hong Kong dollars ($644,000) a day. Hutchison is controlled by Hong Kong's richest man, Li Ka-shing.

Hong Kong is the world's third busiest container port, according to World Shipping Council data. Shanghai is first, followed by Shenzhen.
