Hoarding Westchester couple dies and leaves 150 starving, neglected cats living in squalor

A Westchester couple who died inside their home this week left behind 150 starving cats that the local humane society is struggling to care for.

The homeowners, whose names were not released, were found in their house on Cordial Rd. by Yorktown police performing a wellness check on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

First responders had a hard time getting inside to get to the residents because there were dozens and dozens of cats inside in every room, even in the ceiling and walls of the “dilapidated home,” the Westchester Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said Thursday.

Members of the humane society gathered the orphaned felines, which were mostly Abyssinian mixes.

All of the cats are sick with infections, malnutrition and dehydration. Others were already dead in the house and many had not eaten for “many days,” the SPCA said.

The group’s executive director said it was the largest hoarding case the Westchester SPCA has ever worked on.

“… We desperately need the support of the community to help care for these neglected and sick cats who need urgent medical attention,” said Shannon Laukhuf.

The Yorktown Police Department declined to comment or provide further details Thursday evening.

The humane society is asking for any contributions, whether it be cat food, litter, blankets, towels or financial support.
