Hobbs motorcyclists killed in crash on U.S. Highway 62/180 east of Carlsbad

Two motorcyclists were killed in a crash on U.S. Highway 62/180 Saturday in Eddy County, and a third was airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Eddy County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash at about 8:30 p.m., read a news release, near the junction of U.S. 62/180 and Potash Mines Road.

The three men were driving their motorcycles east when two of them slid on their sides for “unknown reasons,” the release read, and fell off the roadway, colliding with the center median and ejecting the drivers.

Both men, Felipe De Jesus Fuentes Jr., 49, and Joe Michael Flores, 47, both of Hobbs, were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The third motorcycled that also crashed for an unknown reason was driven by Domingo Avila, 50, of Hobbs, who was transported via aircraft to University Medical Center in Hobbs, and treated for life-threatening injuries.

Police were continuing to investigate the cause of the accident, the release read.
