Hockessin bicyclist killed in Bethany Beach identified by police

Police have identified the 71-year-old who died following a collision between his bicycle and a car in Bethany Beach on Tuesday.

Delaware State Police said Joseph Jezyk was the bicyclist from Hockessin, Delaware, who died in a fatal crash on Tuesday morning in Bethany. Jezyk was taken to the hospital, but died from his injuries two days later.

According to police, Jezyk was riding on the southbound shoulder of Coastal Highway, just south of Indian River Inlet Bridge around 10:45 a.m. on Oct. 3 when he turned left crossing in front of a 2020 Lexus.

Jezyk, who was wearing a helmet, hit the Lexus and fell off the bicycle, according to police. The 62-year-old Lexus driver did not sustain injuries during the crash.

Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating this incident and asks witnesses of the crash to contact Senior Cp. J. Smith at 302-703-3267.
