Hockey fans in Topeka might have to wait longer for another team

Reports of professional hockey returning to Topeka later this year may have been too good to be true.

Last Wednesday, a podcast covering minor league hockey called Two Minutes for Roughing had an episode titled "The FPHL is heading west! Topeka, KS announcement."

In that since-deleted, 8-minute episode, Hammerstone Holdings Inc. announced its intentions to bring a hockey team to Topeka and the Federal Prospect Hockey League.

Mathew Torgerson had been working for Hammerstone Holdings Inc. and spoke on the episode, saying they were in with with Stormont Vail Events Center as a possible venue and FPHL commissioner Don Kirnan about joining the league.

That evening, the FPHL sent out a tweet: "The Federal Prospects Hockey League has been made aware of a post on social media in regards to a new member organization. At this time the FPHL has not received an application from this organization. All prospective organizations must submit an application and be approved."

Another minor league hockey page Torgerson is involved with then announced he would no longer be working with Hammerstone Holdings Inc. That website, hammerstoneholdingsinc.com, is now offline.

When contacted via its website on Friday, Erik Thorsteen, director of communications for the FPHL, said a request for an application to join had been made but that it had not yet been returned.

Torgerson had announced the team name, colors and logo on the podcast episode, even giving the team's Twitter handle (@GCBombers) as well as providing a link to the group's website for season ticket deposit information.
