Hokies hand No. 18 Louisville first home loss in 86-70 contest Sunday

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Courtesy of Virginia Tech Athletics)–Elizabeth Kitley and Georgia Amoore each recorded double-doubles to help lead the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team past the Louisville Cardinals 86-70 on the road Sunday.

The double-doubles by Kitley, who had 26 points and 13 rebounds, and Amoore, who had 23 points and 10 assists, led the Hokies (22-4, 13-2) in the contest. Cayla King helped out with nine points and four assists.

Virginia Tech took advantage of fantastic ball movement in Sunday’s game, piling up 21 assists on 34 made field goals. Amoore’s 10 assists paced the Hokies.

After playing to a 3-3 tie early in the game, Virginia Tech went on a 6-0 run with 6:37 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Amoore, to take a 9-3 lead. The Hokies then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 20-13 advantage. Virginia Tech did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 20 points close to the basket.

Virginia Tech kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 9:40 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Matilda Ekh, to increase its lead to 26-13. The Hokies kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 48-35 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia Tech was strong from deep in the period, knocking down six three-point shots to account for 18 of its 28 points.

Virginia Tech continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Kitley, to expand its lead further to 68-52 with 49 seconds to go in the third. The Hokies held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 70-54 edge. Virginia Tech played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 22 points in the paint.

The Hokies then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Virginia Tech got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring four of its 16 total points.
