Holby City has confirmed that Guy Self will be returning to screens next week, as John Michie reprises his role after four years away.

Guy's comeback was first teased in Holby's spring trailer, but we can now reveal that he'll be back on Tuesday, April 7.

Show bosses have already confirmed that Guy will be shaking things up on his arrival back at the hospital, with Ric Griffin among those who is particularly impacted.

However, fans should make the most of the surgeon while they can as Guy is only back in Holby for a brief stint.

Speaking to Inside Soap about how long he'll be sticking around for, John said: "I think it's about a dozen episodes. I was filming from December for about three months. It's been great. I've loved it. "

Discussing the fan reaction to his return, John revealed: "I had quite a big reaction on the street actually!

"People seemed rather excited about him and if I asked them why, they'd say, 'Well, Guy's a bit of a bastard but we like what he gets up to'."

He added: "I think initially people thought, 'Oh my God, who is this? We don't want him in our show!' But I think once people realised that essentially Guy is a flawed character, who actually deserves as much sympathy than hatred, the audience started to really tune into him."

It's a slightly different story on screen, though, as John has confirmed that not everybody will be welcoming Guy back with open arms.

"It's a 50/50 split," John said. "Some people are like, 'Oh God, what's he doing back?', then there are other people who quite like him and recognise his skills as a surgeon. He's a real Marmite character, isn't he?"

Holby City continues on Tuesday, April 7 at 8pm on BBC One.
