Holiday bakers, take note: Another brand of flour is recalled over E. coli concerns

Hodgson Mill recalled two lots of its Unbleached All-Purpose White Wheat Flour, the latest recall connected to ADM Milling and E. coli.

Customers of ADM, from Pillsbury to King Arthur, have been recalling flour and baking mixes since May after the FDA found problems in ADM’s Buffalo, New York, mill. But, according to the Hodgson-written, FDA-posted recall notice, this flour was milled at ADM’s St. Louis facility and repacked at Hodgson Mill.

“We are taking this voluntary precautionary step because of the potential presence of pathogenic E. coli which was discovered through sampling raw uncooked flour,” the notice said.

This covers 5-pound bags with best-by dates of 10-01-2020 and 10-02-2020 and lot Nos. 001042 and 005517. Customers with these bags should stop using them, return them to the place of purchase for a full refund, then clean and sanitize anyplace they were stored.

Anyone working with flour or raw dough products should thoroughly wash hands (20 seconds under hot water), clean and sanitize food contact surfaces and utensils afterwards. Do not eat raw flour or uncooked dough.

Whether frying, baking, broiling or boiling, cooking is the kill step in preventing E. coli. E. coli brings stomachaches and diarrhea from two to eight days, usually three or four days, after eating contaminated foodstuffs. Kids, senior citizens and those with damaged immune systems are most vulnerable to HUS (hemolytic uremic syndrome), a form of kidney failure that can be fatal.

Anyone with questions about this recall can contact Hodgson at 888-417-9343, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Eastern time.
